When I type /join #chat, or join any other channel, nothing that people are typing is coming up. I only see when they enter and leave. It's either that or no one is saying anything anywhere I go, but that doesn't seem likely. What's wrong?

Try joining the channel with two instances of mIRC (or just two connections to the same server) and saying something in the channel yourself. Then see if you can see the message with your other 'self'.)

It is pretty annoying, but there are lots of channels that people mostly just join and never speak in.

you might try typing this in channel
//echo -a $ignore(0)

if it returns anything more than 0 you will want to check the ignore list and see if you ignored *!*@*

or if you recently loaded a script, type /remote off
if you can suddenly see people talking look for a remote like
on *:text:*:#: halt
or unload the script
