Are there any names that other people should avoid? I may not be able to use this knowledge, but I'm sure I could give it to others so that they may benefit. Any names that should be avoided?

If you're referring to your nick when chatting online, I'd suggest not using nicks that don't look like names (ie: all vowels or all consonants).
Also, if you use any of the adult chat networks, most (if not all) of them require that you not use a nick that has a number in it that implies that you are underage (eg: psycho10). If the network has any specific objections to certain types of nicks, this information should be in the MOTD (Message Of The Day).

also, you might stay away from alternating capital letters and lower case letters in the nick. (ie: pSyCo42D) as this is sometimes hard to read, especially after youve been looking at a monitor most of the day.

I think DALnet's netiquette article sums up quite well:

"When you chat on the IRC, you adopt a nick (nickname) by which others will know you. Your nick is your first impression to those you meet, and it should be chosen wisely. Nicks which contain offensive words (we all know what those are) or relate to activities or opinions which should best be kept private, may be considered to be inappropriate in some channels.. It's best to choose something which reflects you, as opposed to a nick that is chosen for its shock value. Avoid spaces and unusual characters in your nick."

Offensive nicknames are usually a big no no (i.e. instant ban), but I find most channels are fairly relaxed about multicase nicknames/hard-to-read nicknames, but you're not setting yourself up for a good first impression.

Regards,

Mentality/Chris
