When i try to run mIRC... Its comes up with the error message.

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item"

I just got a new PC and a router which i didnt have before. I think this may be causing the problem but can anyone tell me how to fix it.

Post here or add me on msn infernal_fatality@hotmail.com

First of all a router has nothing to do with access problems on the local system. That out of the way lets address the problem.

Is this the default login, Owner? (this is a yes, ignore the following)
Have you been granted access to that folder, its installed contents?
Do you have admin priviledges?

this by the way is not an error from mIRC itself, this is windows. I also suggest going to their help, for they may have better answers.

For starters, this is a windows issue.

Second,
First of all try scanning for spyware, Second of all make sure when you are opening it you're not trying to open multiple icons are once.
Last but not least, try an antivirus scan, usually the first thing people do when they get a new computer is get programs or utilities they usually need, some get removed later and done wrong.

report back when these are done.

I ran a Virus scan on the file and it said it was infected. I assume this was an error with my virus scanner because i downloaded it from the official site...

So i allowed it through that and it let it run laugh

Just tried connecting to a server but i get the message saying.

" Connecting to irc.quakenet.org (6668)

-
-irc.quakenet.org- *** Checking Ident
-
-irc.quakenet.org- *** No ident response
-
-irc.quakenet.org- *** Couldn't look up your hostname

Ping? Pong!

Your username is invalid.
Connect with your real username, in lowercase.
If your mail address were foo@bar.com, your username would be foo.
-
Closing Link: Ranek by port80a.se.quakenet.org (USER: Bad username)
-
* Disconnected"

LAst time this happened was because my Firewall was blocking it. Do you know how i can connect without disabling my firewall cus i got a virus last time i did that .

Change your user name, currently as Ranek, to ranek

Note that it says
Quote:

Connect with your real username, in lowercase.

Be sure you are changing the correct thing to lowercase. Your USERNAME is not your NICKNAME. When they say 'username' I think they mean the value that mIRC sends in the USER raw command when you connect. I believe that value is returned by your identd (mIRC internal identd or firewall identd), or if you don't have any identd, I think mIRC returns the first part of your email address from the connect dialog.

In the mIRC options (alt+o), on the Identd tab, enable the identd server, enter a lowercase ident in the user ID, close the options dialog. Try connecting again.

You should see a message in your server window as you connect. It should indicate that the irc server requested ident info, and that your mIRC responded with whatever you entered in the dialog.
