I believe you need Microsoft's speech thing (Sam?) installed for it to work. I can't remember what the name of it was now... Sam comes to mind, but I'm probably thinking of something else.

Yeah, you do, and SAM is correct. Personally, I find that using Microsoft Sam is a waste of time and resources, especially if there's a fair bit of chatter on the channel, and you're using it to read out what's "said" in the channel. I've seen it lag anywhere up to 3 minutes.

I use IBM's ViaVoice in conjunction with Corel's WordPerfect for dictation purposes, as that is my personal preference. I tried to get it to work with mIRC, but with no luck. I think it might be possible to get it to work with mIRC by having a script that uses COMs to relay the information between mIRC and ViaVoice. I don't know for sure, and my knowledge of COMs is limited to what is written in the mIRC help file.

As far as a quick & easy installation of speech recognition for the purposes of using mIRC, I don't see anything.

I haven't tried this, but Microsoft's Speech Recognition information and downloads are here

I have used Microsoft agent with mIRC since agent support was first added to mIRC. While is can slow down things, and it ends up talking fast, it is a viable solution. For those who need this support (visually impared for example) it is fine since the fast speed at which it 'talks' is often what is needed. Both the mirc home site (uk) and mirc.org (usa) have html pages that can test the correct implmentation of micorsoft agent. Once it works in a native windows environment, its not a large task to implement it in mIRC.

Horse C, please note that the Subject of the topic is speech recognition, ie: having the program recognize a command when it is spoken, rather than typed.

Only if you used an illegal copy of a program that someone else already has. Personally, I find that the speech recognition usually has so many errors that I spend almost as much time confirming/correcting as I would just typing the information by hand. Additionally, please note that Speech to text programs generally use a lot of resources.

I wouldn't mind if it used alot of resources and i also wouldn't ming correcting alot. i still prefer to have voice as an option for when i'm busy. Too bad none of my friends would have voice recognition software.

Here's a couple of shareware programs that I found. These both have a 30 day trial, but the registration fee is a lot more reasonable than some of the others.
