I notice a lot of people have asked about mIRC being ported to various operating systems. I installed mIRC on my Linux machine using the WINE WIndows API layer and it works fine. I read the license agreement for mIRC and I don't appear to be violating it by running my registered copy of mIRC on an operating system other than Windows. Would just like to know if this is +OK or if I should uninstall it (hopefully it's fine)

Well obviously I don't speak for mIRC Co., but I see no reason why any software developers would have an issue with WINE (besides Microsoft of course). It immediately provides a massive user base for their product without having to do any additional work themselves. Personally I think it's fine to use software with WINE or any other emulator/abstraction layer unless the EULA explicitly states otherwise.

This page mentions that some users find mIRC runs on WINE. There is no problem running it on another operating system if it works. Most users I find can run mIRC with WINE but have problems with some other features of mIRC and say it runs "slowly". As it says on that page, there simply is not enough time to port mIRC to another operating system.

Regards,

That's super. Yes, I find mIRC runs flawlessly with WINE on Linux, save for a few dialog boxes in mIRC options taking a long time to appear, and the default font can't be Fixedsys for obvious reasons. Thanks for the info; this means I can use my favorite IRC client no matter which OS I'm running smile

Even if the EULA would require a certain operating system to be used, it would be actually irrelevant. The belief that a copyright owner can actually put every condition he can think of in a EULA is laughable. Just think of something like "you are not permitted to sit on a chair using this software product."

Trying to require the use of a certain OS is not less absurd and not less legally non binding to the user, that, lets say, requiring a certain CPU to be used with the product, or a certain sound card or keyboard or whatever.
