withen the next few days i will be reformating my primary disk drive. before i do that, i would like to know if there are any tricks needed to backup mIRC, my current plan was to copy the program folder, then once the new windows install is done, install mIRC fresh to update the registry with any needed entries, then copy the old folder ontop of the new one.
is this the best way of going about this, or are there easier ways?

You don't really have to do all that .. just backup the entire
mIRC folder and then after your new install just put the mIRC
folder wherever you want it and you can run it from there.
The mIRC uninstall information will be added to the registry
when you run it.

Edit: If you have mIRC password protected, you will
have to reset that and you will have to re-enter your name
and registration code .. after you restore mIRC, run it and
type /registration to enter the information .. but you would
have to do those with a reinstall of mIRC anyway.

Without installing mIRC it (probably) won't register itself as a handler of irc:// links, so there certainly is a benefit to doing things properly.

Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and stupid comments are intentional.

Yes, you only need to back up your mIRC directory (with or without the .exe—that's up to you), but remember to write down your registration information because it's entered into the registry. If you're using mIRC to make SSL connections, back up a copy of the OpenSSL installation file.

This shouldn't be a concern because (AFAIK) mIRC rewrites its registry entries on startup. That's why you can move mirc.exe around and Windows always knows where to find it when you click an irc:// link laugh
