The whole server dialog/servers.ini could use a little work, but I agree, mIRC should be able to assume the group you're going to add is equal to $network, or at least offer a drop-combo that one can type into or select from.

However, while we wait... you can /server -a irc.server.com -g GroupName -d Description etc etc...
/help /server will give you more info.

I also wish there was a way to grab a server name from a group via identifier.
$networks(Group/N [,N]) == irc.server.com
