Your username, depending on your settings is the first part of your email address (Alt-O > Connect) or your identd username (Alt-O > Connect > Identd). Make sure it's not something odd. Some networks consider unusual names to be spammers and won't let you connect. Pick something that doesn't look like random characters and you should have no problem connecting.
