there may be also, 'channels' and 'network name or server address' value (but this is rare and I wouldn't like this to complicate matters)
I usualy use these aliases to add to my protect list:

/d protect -w *!*@* $+ $$1
/l protect -w $+(*!*@,$$1,*)
/y protect -w $+(*,$$1,!*@*)
