The ability to assign a value without an '=' in the '/var' command has always been a happy-accident.
Would it kill anyone's scripts if it also worked (100% of the time) without the equals? I'm not the only person who does this, I see /var with no equals all the time in scripts written by other people, and why not, it usually works.
