mIRC has been a shareware program for a very long time now. Years. It costs $20 to register mIRC. This goes towards keeping Khaled clothed, fed and watered so that he can continue to work on mIRC as a
full time job aswell as go towards the correct software/hardware to test and compile mIRC. Occasionally there will also be a charity appeal (as there is at the time of this post, but not for much longer) where all registration payments will go towards the said charity.
The reason people are suddenly getting confused is due to the 'About' dialog that pops up whenever you start mIRC. In versions prior to 6.1 you were able to disable this About dialog from popping up when you started mIRC. This option has been removed and, until you register mIRC, you will reminded every time you start mIRC that you should register it.
mIRC is not a 'crippleware' program. It does not break or stop working if you do not pay for it. However, you will not be able to get rid of the About dialog. You also agreed to pay for mIRC when you installed it, it's part of the license agreement that you can try it for 30 days and then you must pay for it. This is 'shareware' and mIRC is shareware.
You can find out how to register (there are many methods for convenience) on the
How To Register page.
