Hi all!

Sorry I have not been following the latest news on mIRC.

Can someone be good enough to
give me a quick synopsis on what the state of play is now? With particular emphasis as regards mIRC and having to pay for it etc.,etc.

I should appreciate any help on this matter.

Thank you very much

mIRC has been a shareware program for a very long time now. Years. It costs $20 to register mIRC. This goes towards keeping Khaled clothed, fed and watered so that he can continue to work on mIRC as a full time job aswell as go towards the correct software/hardware to test and compile mIRC. Occasionally there will also be a charity appeal (as there is at the time of this post, but not for much longer) where all registration payments will go towards the said charity.

The reason people are suddenly getting confused is due to the 'About' dialog that pops up whenever you start mIRC. In versions prior to 6.1 you were able to disable this About dialog from popping up when you started mIRC. This option has been removed and, until you register mIRC, you will reminded every time you start mIRC that you should register it.

mIRC is not a 'crippleware' program. It does not break or stop working if you do not pay for it. However, you will not be able to get rid of the About dialog. You also agreed to pay for mIRC when you installed it, it's part of the license agreement that you can try it for 30 days and then you must pay for it. This is 'shareware' and mIRC is shareware.

You can find out how to register (there are many methods for convenience) on the How To Register page.

It not only feeds Khaled, but often he uses the sales of mIRC to donate directly to charity. This is one of the best shareware programs out there, and Khaled shows his concern for the world by giving up his proceeds 100% to these charities when he runs such a promotion. Keep your eyes on the main site at http://www.mirc.co.uk/ for when these promotions are being run. Or buy it when he's not donating to charity to make sure he's got some spiffy duds to wear. smile

"All of a sudden"? Did you even bother reading the posts on this thread before replying to it?

You've always been expected to pay for mIRC, as has been said, this is NOT new to mIRC 6.1 and above. The only difference is that you can't disable the 'About' box so that you don't stop getting reminded about the registration payment. To reiterate mIRC has always been shareware, you have always had to pay for it - you just can't ignore that fact nowadays, rather than in the past.

Khaled has made it so mIRC still works if it's not paid for because he understands that not everyone can immediately pay the $20, and many under-18s without jobs or anything use mIRC, and some parents may be reluctant to pay for it. mIRC will still work after the 30 days, you just have to deal with the Reminder screen. Sorry, but that's the way it is - just because your parents can't pay for the latest video game doesn't mean you have permission to steal it. The same kind of principal applies to mIRC registration.
