Actually, I'm not a new user to mIRC, simply that now, I'm operating off a new system.

I've downloaded the newest version of mIRC to evaluate and now discovered that every time it connects to a server, I get a error message thus:
"NTVDM.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created."

Some of you may know instantly what this means but for this poor, naive creature writing this, it is like trying to climb Everest with a Grand Piano on your back.

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong and how I can put this right?

Regards
Majic

since nobody else has ever had this problem and reported it to these forums, i'm inclined to belive its a problem with your PC itself, rather than anything to do with mirc.
Try closing NTVDM.exe by hitting ctrl+alt+del and clicking on it and selecting end process and then running mirc.

It can probably be stopped from running at start up by going to start, run, typing: msconfig and unchecking it in the startup tab.

ntvdm.exe is a vital system process that should not be terminated, it's function is to allow 16-bit processes to run stably (sp), on a 32-bit operating system.

Are you by chance running a 64-bit system, if so, mIRC isnt fully 32-bit compatible and thus wont work stably (sp) if at all.

its so vital it isn't running on my windows XP machine OR my win2k machine...

I still recommend you close it via the ctrl+alt+del method. It won't cause any ill effects in the long run because as soon as you reboot your computer it will be started up again.
As i guess ur running win98/95, windows will probably let you close it, but if anything goes wrong, just reboot your machine and it will be fine. Remember, don't stop it working at startup if you get any problems once you've ctrl+alt+del'd it.

There is nothing stopping them disabling it, however they should not when trying to run 16-bit applications, so if they happen to do so and disable it, their applications will fail.

Ntvdm.exe description: Ntvdm.exe is a system process.
When you start a 16-bit program on a computer running Windows NT, the Ntvdm.exe and Wowexec.exe processes start. After you quit the 16-bit program, the Ntvdm.exe and Wowexec.exe processes remain in memory. This behavior is a design feature of Windows NT. The Ntvdm.exe and Wowexec.exe processes remain in memory in case you start another 16-bit program. Leaving the Windows-On-Windows (WOW) environment (which consists of the Ntvdm.exe and Wowexec.exe processes) in memory improves performance. The WOW environment is not loaded when you start Windows NT. It is loaded when you first start a 16-bit program.

System Process: Yes
Background Process: Yes
Uses Network: No
Hardware Related: No
Common Errors: N/A
