I think I have finally figured out how to use this now, or at least I thought I did. I found where I wanted to go but it keeps telling me I need a "voice". What does this mean & how do I get it? I'd really appreciate it if someone could please help. I am getting so frustated with the whole thing. Patiently waiting.

'Voice' is a mode that enables a user to speak in a channel that is set mode +m (moderated). When a channel is +m it means that only voiced and opped users can speak. Voiced users have a + next to their nicknames, opped users have an @ next to their nicknames.
The only ones who can voice you are the channel ops (@), so you'll need to ask one of them for voice. Check the channel topic first to see if there are any rules as to who gets voiced or how to request it. Type /topic #channel-name to see the topic.
G'luck!

I generally only say 'voice and ops' because that is what I believe +m was originally aimed at. I am not going to list every single status possible, there's no point (: - IRCd developers keep adding pointless channel statuses, I can't be bothered to complicate things for people.

There's also different names used by different people for each status, eg:
+a: protected, channel admin, protected channel admin.

+o and +v are the most common, that is the point of Mentality's post. I think it is safe to say that ALL IRC2 compatible servers support those modes over and above any others.
