i am fed up with males posing as females in the channels. i suggest that when we instal a new version of mirc it should ask us for our sex. that would be visible later when we would do a UCentral. that way very few would install the program as the sex they are not. and we would be saved from the embarassment of finding out that Suzy is really Dick. think about it. smirk

I personally couldn't care less what sex the person i'm talking to is, considering i don't try and flirt with people on IRC. wink

On top of this, people don't always want to display what sex they are..and people who lie to you in a query message can just as easily lie on installation and say they are female when they are male.

It's just one of those things, you'll find it on any chat medium, not just IRC.

Although a good idea, there's the drawback of it being unnecessary. As stated people who do not want to give out their real gender will lie about it either way.

But you gotta think about it from a humorous perspective... The person on the other end may be doing it just to keep people on their toes. I find it rather funny when someone in the channel makes it known that he's been hitting on another male. What makes it more interesting is when a female does it to another female...now that is a conversation.

Don't take it personally, there's just other people out there looking to have a bit of fun...even if it is at our expense. If this happened to you, then why not do the same thing back at the person LOL.

Gotta love IRC...

It would never be an accurate statistic. If people can lie in chatrooms about their personal details then they can lie when filling out mIRC's settings. Some networks have a feature called "Fields" which allow people to include things about themselves in their whois replies, here is a sample of mine:

[09:11:17] Dropbear gender Bloke
[09:11:17] Dropbear location Sydney - New South Wales - Australia
[09:11:17] Dropbear age Very old

It's easy enough to fraudulently use those functions too. If liars worry you then IRC probably isn't the place for you. People often don't lie because they want to be dishonest but because they want to remain anonymous without offending people by not providing an answer to questions. An alternative is to be like me - I am the opposite and simply just don't answer personal questions and rarely talk in private too. One other thing I doubt that it is always bloke that lie about themselves. Surely as many sheilas would do the same thing.

And Yes!!! them dropbears. they are vicious things!

Cheers!

Oh n one more thing.... maybe they should ban that goood ole "asl" from irc completely. they're so annoying.. that way you wont have to worry about someone telling you what gender they used to be.. as you cant even ask in the first place ;]

lol. Strangely enough I didn't think twice about my nickname, I registered it when this post materialised. To date, it's been a great nickname to hide with. Sometimes there are times when I want to disguise myself without being marked away so I can pay attention to one particular thing and not be disturbed as much. grin

EDIT: Looks like the secret is out now though... blush

You can't prevent anyone from lying about their age... Plus, IRC wasn't made for people like you to cyber. Like it or not in IRC everyone is what he/she wants to be. If you're fed up with males saying they're females, then don't cyber; it's so simple wink

Thats the thing about IRC, anyone can be whoever they want. So if a 40 year old male wants to be a 25 year old then its that simple. People use IRC as a means to escape reality. What they do on IRC is pretty much their business. If they wanna cyber with someone thats fine as long as the entire channel doesn't have to view it.

But to get the point across, regardless if this feature is added or not which I don't see happening, it is pointless because not everyone will wanna be truthful about it.

have mirc ask for social security numbers

That would be meaningless. Why? Because anyone can put a number(s) in the space provided and press return. You'd need a name and number or two numbers which can then be verified against a government database. Now comes the good part - Privacy legislation - Not all countries have it but some do and those governments arn't going to surrender personal information held by them for the purposes of keeping the occasional paedophile out of chat rooms.

The last thing is, not every country has a social security numbering system. What do people outside the US use? The only time I ever had the equivalent of a social security number is when I was briefly on the dole about 15 years ago.
