it means exactly what it says, the channel is invite only, you have to get someone to /invite you in. also: see this

/mode #channel +i
(invite only)
with this channel mode turned ON only invited users can join the channel, so if OWNER makes /invite #channel you ONLY then you can join (coz you are invited to it) else you cannot.

Channels can be set so that only users who are "invited" can join. In some cases its done to limit a channel to only friends, in others its done on a temporary basis to keep troublemakers out.
Considering that TMD channels are notorious for illegal filesharing of movies, i'm not surprised they set themselves to invite only. (yeah, like that'll help hide what they're up to *snort*) Take some advice, go rent the movies you want to see. Takes less time, is legal, and they wont infect your puter.

they also don't cost much, and if you rent movies regularly, you can get a members card and get discounts ! (from most places, in england anyway.)

<opinion> You've shown your feelings about denying people help or advice regarding mass/illegal file trading and, from what I have seen, been told about the policies of this board by the Moderators. It's quite clear your comment was aimed at ParaBrat's warning (and possibly tidy_trax's contribution too) about TMD.
This is a perfectly good, sensible bit of advice. When the person mentions a channel such as #TMD-Movies (Etc) it's not surprising somebody wants to make sure they know the dangers of using those channels aswell as the legalities. It's all part and parcel of the "helping" criteria - giving advice about something which could cause their computer harm, and letting them know about the meaning of IRC/mIRC.
You might aswell get used to this advice being given out, because people genuinely want to look out for people who mass file trade - it's not surprising that they do it, a lot of people are none the wiser that mIRC is in fact a chat program primarily. However, when they come here, I (and I assume many others) feel a duty to inform them of the dangers and immorals of using a chat program for illegal file trading - even moreso when the author of the program itself disapproves of it. </opinion>
My 2 cents.
Regards,
Mentality/Chris

my opinion is that it is good to give ADVICES, but i have seen that when new ppl in IRC ask some questions about something (no matter is it to join x-channel or how to use dcc in x-channel or to even connect to x-network; where x-network/channel means illegal) everybody here who reply in 90% cases starts to:
1. complain about illegal things 2. give advices (which is nice and not too bad)
-instead to give directly answer which is asked (not in this case, general only)
but on MY OPINION, person that asks this things already knows that it is illegal to do whaterver it will do (download music or movies) and they simply dont care and it is a fact that they WILL NOT care what will ppl say about legal/ilegal stuff so on my opinion it is useles to whine always and in most cases to even warn them (i know it is not in this case and i have NOTHING against ParaBrats post) as Tidy_Trax said... it was for general purpose...
+ as said b4 you cant stop ppl to do this no matter what you say to them, mirc supports upload/download so....
all from me

The users question was answered but I dont think we can assume that ppl asking about certain things already know the dangers or issues surrounding it (such as legal/illegal, being against AUP or TOS, trojans etc). In fact, when a user doesnt understand about channels being set to invite, i cant help but lean towards the opinion that they are new (no offense to the original poster, we were all new once and none of us know everything). I think its only fair to give further information even tho they didnt ask specifically when not knowing is so risky. As you said, its up to them what they do with that info. imo, i think its worth taking the time to type a bit more info to be sure they know about potentially harmful issues. If they know and dont care, so we've got a bit more wear on our keyboards, no biggie. If they DIDNT know, then they now do, which i think is important. Keep in mind that while we see the same things over and over, most of the ppl who post questions here dont, so its likely new to them

Try using IRC for its intended purpose, it isn't meant to be a haven for leechers and rippers of dirty downloads.

so on my opinion it is useles to whine always and in most cases to even warn them As a channel op in a help channel, I can assure you that the VAST majority of new users, and a LARGE majority of users who have been using IRC for several months or more, remain highly ignorant of the basic dangers involved in file "sharing". They remain equally ignorant of the most basic precautions that should be employed if one wishes to become involved in file transferring (whether illegal or not). as said b4 you cant stop ppl to do this no matter what you say to them Obviously, and I for one would be happy to see mIRC lose the Fserv altogether. However, note also that: (1) by being regular helpers here and/or in IRC help channels we have accepted a moral responsibility to try to help people - and I for one definitely define advising people how to avoid viruses and trojans as helping them. (2) by actively helping someone to do something illegal you are making yourself an accessory to the crime (an accomplice). This is not only morally reprehensible, but is a criminal offence in itself in some jurisdictions. If the board tolerated or encouraged such behaviour it could find itself in legal trouble - and the more you help people with illegal behaviour here, the more YOU are actually increasing the risk of the board being shut down by some record company's lawyers...
