its probably not a script. on some networks they disallow access to certain ISPs without first having a registered nickname, this certainly cuts down on AOL crap connections

Of course it is about the script. Why don't you take a look at the debug output. And there's no nick registration on Undernet.

Here are the step-by-step instructions to reproduce that error message:

1. Try to connect to any Undernet server. (I didn't test it on other networks)

2. Send any command to the server while you are loggin on to the server. I mean while you are still receiving the notices like "*** Looking up your hostname" "*** Checking Ident" etc. For example type /whois nick . The server sends a numeric 451 * :Register first.

The word "Register" doesn't mean to register a nickname or username.

seeing the lag counter, there still is a script active.

this might be some mdx thing (toolbar with lagbar in it)
or anything else... (dll that is still loaded after a /remote off)

lag counters/scripts shouldn't start unless $status is 'connected'

Next time you get connected on the network - goto the local network help channel (#help maybe) or try to find an oper. Maybe they can shed some light on the source of this message. If the message due to some thing happening on the server, they will know and will be able to help you. If, as said before it is a script, they can tell you so too.

cant send cmd /lag.whatever to the server before you sent nick/user .. that's why you're getting that raw 451..
