(this topic has come up meekly before, but...)

mouse gestures is the spunkiest concept.. very addictive, and it'll add to Mirc's character..

Mozilla has it, Opera has it (and MS hasnt discovered it yet..!)

dont think twice about it, please!

Mozilla and Opera are webbrowsers - mIRC is a IRC client. Web browser are graphical programs. IRC clients are text programs. They don't mesh.

"Mozilla and Opera are webbrowsers - mIRC is a IRC client..."

does it matter??

i was suggesting an enhancement in the interface, something that the coolest programs out there (read Mozilla and Opera) have used.. Mirc/Opera/Moz do gel, coz all of 'em have multiple tabbed-windows as an interface and a rich set of (frequently-needed) commands

ps: i kno what Mirc is wink

alot of chronic mirc users would never want mirc go have an i-face the kind of the other p2p or imesh mozilla things have .... or to ever have voice / video support ...
they might gel but how about mirc having its one unique class ....

What would you use mouse gestures for in mIRC though? A browser is well suited to mouse gestures: its something you lounge back and browse with a mouse, you only need a few commands to navigate and in many cases of 'just browsing' don't have to use the keyboard at all.

mIRC is the exact opposite: its a chat program - designed for use with a keyboard, once you've joined a channel to chat you rarely have to use the mouse, its commands generally take parameters.

I suppose it would be cool to circle someones nick with the mouse and give them the virtual finger to send them on their way, but is it really practical?

[edit: the spelling made sense at the time :P]

If your browser supports it, it may be blocking the image as it does not originate from the same server as the main page. Your browser may have an option to exclude that site from blocking.

Also check to see if viewing of other users images is enabled in your setup (My Home > 'Display Preferences' I think), this might stop your image from showing to you also.

Web browsers aren't graphical programs, Any more than mIRC is. They are HTTP clients that have been developed and expanded over the years by companies with imagination and initiative, Whilst IRC has stagnated and not evolved because nobody takes a lead, And because "anything aesthetic isn't needed and lame".

Strokeit sounds cool
as for what the hell to use them for...
TAB completion name cycling
part channel/close window
assignable to /aliases like /f2 /sf2 etc.
Cycle trhoguh windows
... so on so forth.

I like the thought of tying a mouse gesture to my $insult alias.
It would add such a physical expression behind the words of a randomly chosen line of degredation.

Web browsers and the Web in general are more suited to graphical interfaces by nature because they are primarily for the presentation of data, whereas mIRC and IRC are for real-time chat. Unless you plan on creating a GUI for the keyboard and using the mouse to press each 'key' then the keyboard will always be the primary input device for IRC.

Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and stupid comments are intentional.

first off, i agree with Skip on how the ergonomics of IRC / Browsers contrast...

...but also factor this..

all the "keyboardy-ness" of IRC notwithstanding, we _do_ still use the mouse, dont we.. how would we like it if a quick swish of the mouse would do the magic! (reminds me of the slick auto-copy-on-highlight feature in linux & mirc - show me one person who doesnt love it wink )

for instance half the time i wanna close a window (the other half of times i use Alt+Z) i find myself drawing a quick " L " with the mouse, coz for some reason i'm reminded of the Opera environment ( Mirc & Opera - both apps with the "cool quotient", u c ) ofcourse the window won't close which's really disappointing

so gestures r lightweight and easy to implement (look at Clockwerx's old post ) and best of all u dont havta point at a small tab/button/menu-item to click.. instead, the entire chat-area can be ur arena

..and u can always turn it off if u dont like it

so what do u think?
