I use IRC mainly for gamesnet, which has a policy of no advertising in channels where you don't have access (at least peon). I help a gameserver company with advertising/server maintenance/etc and part my no-access channels, /amsg an ad for the company, then rejoin. So I think an /amsg feature that only messages channels where you have peon or higher would be useful. grin

I don't know of anyone who enjoys spammers anyways, so how about just not advertising?

I don't spam it often, and I know who does enjoy it, people who are looking to rent servers. Is there any point to your reply other than letting me know what you think? I don't mean to be rude but I'm not interested. It's just a suggestion to the author.

Considering the fact that spamming as a whole is not allowed, I do hope Khaled ignored this suggestion. Why make a special thing for the one network that foolishly allows spamming frown

Let me rephrase..

I don't know of anyone on the recieving end of the spam that enjoys it. Of course companies don't mind it, or else they wouldn't do it. Anyways, if you really felt is neccisery to spam, it can be scripted. How bout taking the initiative, rather than being lazy?

No need to rephrase.. I responded with "and I know who does enjoy it, people who are looking to rent servers." Meaning people who need servers see my message, join the channel and check out our prices. Like I said, I do it rarely and only in channels where I have access, where the operators of the channel know me. They don't mind because I don't do it very often. Regarding "being lazy"... technology is such that people can afford being lazier as new features are added. And this is a suggestion for a new feature. Why download mIRC when I can write my own IRC client? I guess that makes me lazy.

I won't be k-lined because had you read the original post, you'd realize this type of advertising on GamesNET, with the permission of the channel operators, is perfectly legal. And why wouldn't it be? The operators can run their channel as they see fit, and that includes the occasional advertisement by a friend (obviously no one is going to allow any disruptive spam), I don't understand how you think I would be k-lined? So I don't see the point of your last comment, but thank you for the alias idea.

Just curious, why are you using amsg, when you are specifying the channels? >:P

Because I forgot I had written /amsg as something else. So ignore that (or replace /amsg with /msg instead).

Firstly, I'm not a great fan of this idea.

Secondly, I'm 99.999% sure Khaled will not introduce this into mIRC.

Thirdly, this isn't really possible or practicle - you'd have to get mIRC to check the access of the user with the channel, all for one network!? That's a crazy idea to be honest. GamesNET is just one thread in the tapestry, and seeing as no feature of mIRC has ever been designed to work with just one individual network, I doubt it's going to start now (that's to the best of my knowledge anyway).

I'd use the code that people have been generous enough to give above...any channel operator/owner that is happy to allow 'spam' in their channel is foolish, it is a big push factor for most users - I'd never stay in a channel that has some lame advert message every 30/60/120 minutes (or whatever time scale you use).

Not only this, but this feature would not benefit that many users. GamesNET is, on average, the 6th largest network in the world...that means it has 35-40,000 users online, again, on average (please don't bombard me with netsplit.de statistics). Now, out of those users, let's say 10,000 spam. 10,000 users it might benefit out of...about 1 million mIRC users? If it was added to mIRC, I think it would be critically bashed I'm afraid.

Happy advertising.

Please note I wasn't suggesting that this only be available on the GamesNET network, and I'm not aware of what it would take to implement the feature for any network (checking access doesn't seem too hard, but then again I know nothing of the code). And just for the record, I don't have any kind of timer on the ad, I do it literally a few times a week. That's what I meant by rarely.

I can understand everyone's beef with spam, but I think the extent to which I "spam" is misunderstood. I don't consider myself a spammer. I'm starting to wish I hadn't even suggested it; it's not even that big of a deal, I just thought it could be an extra bell/whistle.

Its an extra bell/whistle that is best left to being scripted on a network by network basis.

The framework is already provided, so why not learn how to script it, and save countless others from having to put up with a feature that very little are going to use.
