Hosting an IRC channel doesnt require a .com, it requires a shell sccount. This means a dedicated computer that you can access and control remotly. As are .com's, shells can be expensive, and can increase depending on bandwidth usage. If you do want o purchase a shell, you can easily run an IRCd such as Unreal.

Well for a .com being expensive, I suppose that depends on what you consider expensive. Me personally, I use www.directnic.com for my domains, and they charge $15/year. And I know there are other registrars out there that charge like $10/year. I personally don't consider that to be expensive.

They mentioned a 125mb size limit when referring to the ".com" so I assumed hositng as well. I realise domains are inexpensive, but hositng can be. I am currently looking for a plane to host my site so that I can get it back up and running, but haven't found anywhere under 300/yrs thus far. Thats a little expensive considering Im not paying for college.

Consider yourselves lucky. I pay $140 over 2 years for my domain licence and I am about to shift to .NET hosting at the tiny sum of $800 per annum. And all of the above is considered 'reasonable' here.

First, jsut wanna make some edits that I must have missed with a lil lack of sleep. I meant plane to be place, and "im not paying for college" really means I am >:D

But as for hositng, I've seen a varying amount. i was looking at one for 6-700 year, for something like 15 gigs of transfer, and 3 gigs of space--but thats not anything near what I need. I used to have my site hosted with a company in Australia for 60/yr, but I have since realised anyone that cheap has no idea wtf they are doing. I mean all respect to autralian people, but "hostonce.com" is just that--host one time then leave.

The fact that I had a choice to either have e:mail, php, mysql, or the admin control panel working at one time, rather then together was annoying. I would ask if they could fix php, "It's all fixed" they said. I revisit and find "Cannot connect to MySQL Database... *Sigh* There was also the two week downtime that i got NOTHING for. I pay a yearly fee, and do not get a 2 week credit in return. Now, I mean I can understand if people want to update servers, but I got absolutly no responce via mail saying "Hey, we're going to be doing some maintanace.

But enough ranting, Im just looking for a reasonable webhost to get a website back up. Unfortunatly, it looks like it might be a while >:\

I assume that $140/$800 is AUD? If so, yeah I'd say that is reasonable. But then again, I don't pay for anything so what do I know? smile
