Hello, everybody!

I would like to ask a very important question for my visually-impaired friend. My visually-impaired friend is a REGISTERED mIRC user who recently got a new Windows XP installed on her computer.

I have tried to set her mIRC to a larger fonts. And she tried to read it. She says she can read a little but her nose almost touches the screen by 1/2 inch and she has to bend her back a little due of reading too close to the monitor (LOL!) She asked me to increase the font size to a bigger one. I told her the only way I can do is to go up to 28 inches.

By the way, she is most comfortable to use ARIAL BOLD at 36 points which is easier for her to read. But mIRC limited to 28 points. I wish I would increase that to 36.

I tried manually typed into "36" number from the default "9" by mIRC's setting but the dialog box warned that I could only go from 5 to 30 so, I was stuck so, cannot go beyond 28 or 30 points for a font.

Would anyone suggest me how to fix my visually-impaired friend to have a bigger font for mIRC 6.03?

I appreciate your help.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
John Cunniff

Windows XP comes with user Accessibility options under the control panel...if im not mistaken they have an option for the visually impaired (a magnifying glass on the screen) so you can read the text a little better....there is also an option for the hearing impaired as well....try using that first and see if that helps...

Using the /font command you can get round that limitation.
/font -ad -36 arial
That would set the active window to Arial at 36 points and make it the default for that window type. The '-' sign is important since otherwise the size is taken to mean pixels.

Unfortunately you can't set all mIRC windows to default to that font/fontsize at once, so you'll have to use that command in each window type at least once (ie. once in a Query Window, once in a Channel Window, etc.).

I doubt the MS Magnifier would be practical in a fast moving chat room. Perhaps mIRC should be able to support what the font is able to deliver which means Arial, and others, should be able to go to 72.

Not sure if this is relevant to Win XP or not. In Win98, you can go into:
Control panel - Display - Settings - Advanced .. you can set your machine to show you 'large fonts'. You can choose large or even set your own size.

Hope this helps. smile

Hello.

You are right! Magnifiers is a bad idea for mIRC since my visually-impaired person had experienced with LP-Windows from VisionWare, Inc. in Brookline, MA and it was too awkward for her. She loves big fonts in any windows she uses such as WordPerfect, Instant Messenger such as AOL I increases the magnification insidea program and font size increased also for her reading needs without having to deal with magnification for chats mIRC is included, too.

The_Game, I am glad you got me the right answer so, I will make an alias for a woman like this:

/alias /big /font -ad 36 arial

That should do trick for her no problem. smile

Have a nice weekend as it is snowing now! Yuck!

I don't mind the cooler weather, shame it's in the 30's and 40's here at the moment. Which is about 110 - 120 on the old scale (I think)
