Morning.

I've an odd question, and I wondered if you guys could help me out. At the moment, when I log onto IRC, it displays my IP address as ending in .town.cable.ntl.com - which is correct. However, when I used to log on, it would give me some spiel about being unable to resolve my IP address and use a numeric one instead. I was wondering, do you know a way to force IRC to use this numeric IP address (which I prefer) rather than the wordy one?

Thanks,

This is out of your hands. The IRC server you connect to tries to do a reverse DNS lookup on your IP address. If it finds a match then it uses your reverse DNS (*.hudd.cable.ntl.com). If it doesn't find one (before a timeout value) then it uses a cloaked version of your IP.

So unless you can influence your DNS entry, I see no way of doing this.

However, ask the network staff if they support vhosts (virtual hosts). That way you can fully mask your host.
