Forums Connection Issues Accepting DCC

Hi,

When I try to get a DCC, it says in the status field:
accepting send, and a minute later it says connection failed.

In the status window I get:
DCC Get of XXXX from YYYY incomplete (unable to connect)

What should I do to resolve this?

DCC connection problems are almost always on the senders side.

In addition to the fact that most of the time, it's the sender's fault, make sure that you aren't blocking the filetype (alt-O > DCC > Ignore) and that you aren't blocking all downloads (alt-O > DCC). If you're set right in those places, then it's almost guaranteed to be the sender who has the problem unless you're at a business or university that may block downloads.

Right, I guess I should have mentioned making sure their firewall isn't blocking the outgoing connections. If ignore were the problem, the error would say "dcc send rejected, filetype ignored" or whatever it says. I think there is a warning dialog or something for it too, can't recall that part exactly.

Ignore is disabled, and downloads aren't blocked.
I get this sometimes at home, so than it's the sender.

When I tried at the university, I got the same msg. I can connect to a network and channel, but a DCC gives the same.
They must be blocking some ports, is it possible to set mIRC to different port for DCC? Is there a way to see which ports they are blocking?

That isn't always the case, though. Sometimes it does just give the can't connect error. I haven't tested it to find out what causes it to sometimes give one error and sometimes the other, though. That's why I mentioned it.

They can block downloads in a variety of ways. Some will block downloads containing certain file extensions, such as .mp3. Some will just prevent all downloads of any type. Some will just block all DCC downloads. And some will just block certain ports (which isn't very effective, so isn't a common practice). In any case, if you cannot download from anyone at the university, then you might as well not bother trying. Even if you did manage to find a way to bypass it, if you are caught, you can be expelled. That's certainly not worth a few downloads.

I know from other students that http and ftp downloads are possible.
