first off, if this has been noted already, i apologize. i have searched but found nothing. why is it that the settings normally saved in registry are not saved elsewhere, (like mirc.ini) WHEN -portable is used? this proves to be very annoying when every time mIRC opens, you have to bother with the about dialog (for us that have registered, thats a big deal) and all the lock settings, etc, stored in the reg are not saved. just an idea i had maybe this'll be fixed next release.

I can't seem to reproduce this issue here, when I use the -portable switch mIRC correctly saves all settings in the mirc.ini file. Can you describe a step by step process with a clean install of mIRC that reproduces this issue for you?

I believe this problem only occurs when you do not have permissions to write to the mirc.ini file... Such as when you are a "Guest" user, There is a similar post in this section.

Hello. I would first apologize for my poor english. smile

I have kinda the same problem. Yesterday at work, I launched mIRC with -portable and entered my registration key. So a section [user] with the registration info appeared in the mirc.ini file and nowhere else in the registry. Perfect !

Back home, I launched mIRC again... and the dialog "not registered" came back ! frown So I re-registered. And this morning, at work, again the same problem. But the [user] section in mirc.ini file is still there. Is it because the drive letter is different at home and at work ? Or because Windows versions are different (2K at work, XP at home) ?

Moreover, the lock settings where never saved : I see the section in the mirc.ini file but it seems not to work.

Someone to help me ?

In order to keep that "not registered" screen from showing up, you'll have to use the same installation of mIRC each and every time. I admit I'm doing some semi-educated guessing here, as I haven't actually used that option.

I'm not sure to understand what you mean. I use mIRC on my USB stick (that's why I use the -portable switch). Of course the driver letter is not always the same on each computer, but beside that, the installation is always the same.

If the changing of the drive letter does not permit to use mIRC as a portable application, I think that mIRC is not portable at all and thus the -portable switch is useless. confused

When registering mIRC, the datas are saved in the windows registry, not in mIRC.
You can try it with making a full install of mIRC, register it and then launch another copy placed anywhere on your drive (without the -portable option).
Each copy launched on your computer will be registered (using the same user account).
I wonder the -portable option disable the registry reading...

Exactly. And I use the -portable option to NOT use the registry.

I made some tests and it seems that the problem is not the drive letters, but the OS : when I lauch mIRC on a different computer with the same version of Windows (2K) (the USB stick has a different drive letter), the registration info is correct. When I launch mIRC on a different computer with another version of Windows (XP Home), the registration info is lost.

I doubt that the information is lost, but rather, just not in the location where that version of Windows is looking for it.

I'm not sure what (if anything) Khaled could do about this, as I'm not an expert regarding Windows programming.

Of course. smile The information is still in the mirc.ini file (I checked to be sure). And the mirc.ini file is correctly used for other parameters. So it seems that that particular information is not correctly read by Windows.

I am available for other tests if necessary...

i have a similar problem but im not using it on another computer. there is no registration info in the registry and i try to run it witht he portable switch and it still comes up as a trial. i put my reg info in and the mirc.ini file doesnt change and it is not read only.
does the mirc folder have to be int he original location of default install (program files\mirc) for it to work?

Thanks, I managed to reproduce this issue when running mIRC on a USB drive on different computers. This issue has been fixed for the next version.
