Always found it frustrating that MIRC will not allow us to have another window up at the same time. MIRC takes over the screen and sometimes it is nice to be able to toggle btween MIRC and another window application. If a friends wants a number, I should be able to cut and paste without having to click on the window in the taskbar.

I'm not entirely sure, but do you perhaps have the "On Top" setting turned on for the main mIRC window? You can turn it off by clicking on the mIRC icon on the top left of the mIRC window and clicking on "On Top" if it was checked, or by going to alt+o -> Display -> Options -> [Windows..] and unchecking "[x] mIRC main window always on top". If you disable the option, then other windows are allowed to be displayed on top of the mIRC window. If that option already was disabled, then something else is going on..

On some rare occasions and for an unknown reason, I end up with mirc being "on top" while the menu item wasn't checked. The solution is to check it and then uncheck it again.

Hmm.. how about the checkbox in the mIRC Options in that case?

I'm talking about when the checkbox is already unchecked. I mentioned this as a sidenote, in case it's relevant to the OP's problem (ie if his checkbox is unchecked too). Although if this happens often (or even more, always), chances are it's just the setting turned on.
