Can you burn any DVD that you rent? I am using Nero that I downloaded and tried to burn Anchorman and did not work. Or what is the best software to use?

Rental DVDs often have (additional) anti-piracy schemes in place. Hopefully I don't have to explain why no-one here is going to tell you how to get round that.

I didnt know you could add an extra anti coping layer to a dvd, wouldnt that effect the players ability to play the dvd?

Not really. Just like there are numerous anti-piracy schemes for audio CDs to try and prevent copying which will still allow them to play on (most) music players.

Difficult, but by no means impossible, as most video stores that have DVD's for rent (which these days is pretty well all of them), have that protection. Basically it's to ensure that someone won't rent the DVD for a night, burn a copy of it, and then rent/sell the burnt copy.

It's not too hard to create something that's copy-resistant (although of course no readable media can be truly copy-proof). In audio CDs the most common means is to create intentionally erroneous data in the disc format to 'confuse' CD drives that try to read it. Basically a CD player in a stereo or CD-walkman is too primitive to try and read this data and so isn't tripped up by it containing errors, whereas a computer's CD drive must support more than just audio CDs and so must read the data, errors and all. With DVDs it's a lot harder since even the most basic dedicated DVD player will almost certainly support VCDs, SVCDs, audio CDs, and probably a few other formats, but there are still methods around to hinder copying.

I have never found a single cd or dvd that i have not been able to just copy straight away.
Not that I have ever copied a cd or dvd mind you for any purpose other than to backup or watch becuase i drunk to much and the store wants it back 5 hours ago and i havent seen it yet. <snicker snicker>
MPAA i would report my address to you, but it has a (c) symbol on the street name, and i dont want to breach its copyright in sending you the fax, sorry.

rolma @ DaveC
but aren't you allowed to make a backup copy of whatever for your own use, as long as "you have the original" copy?

In audio CDs the most common means is to create intentionally erroneous data in the disc format to 'confuse' CD drives that try to read it. Except that such protection only prevents you from playing the CD in a wide range of players, and not from copying it: In order to listen to the CD you have to rip it, using something called Burst Sync mode. On DVDs the situation is entirely different though, as the data is compressed and thus needs to be error-free also when read by a player, to a reasonable extent. Copy protection such as extra layers can only be implemented to an extent such that all players support it, and it still doesn't prevent you from ripping and decrypting the data that's on the disk, because all you need is the ability to actually read the data.

its closer to "you may make a backup copy for recovery/replacement purposes only, of the original that you own", some useage licences try and say thats not ok, but normally local law overrides them. However I doubt "recovery/replacement purposes" really covers copies of rental store dvd's (unless i made it incase i damaged the original during watching lol)

When you have little kids and you buy a dvd for them, best thing to do is always make a backup copy for them, I found using DVD-Shrink has been a great program.
