Please read post before replying.

i've recently noticed that when i'm playing mp3s in mirc, i get a cracking or popping sound intermixed with the music. i have tried playing the same mp3 through winamp and the cracking is gone. i know it is not my speakers, as i have tested them with my external mp3 player. it is not the connection between my speakers and my computers, as i have tried the cabling on another set of speakers on a different computer, and again, the popping is gone. i think it may have something to do with the driver that is actually decoding the mp3 for mirc. now, i know that mirc does not have its own mp3 decoder, so i'm wondering where/how does mirc play mp3's?

deep down, i'm really superficial.

It uses Windows Media Player. It's almost certainly a codec problem. If the problem only just started occurring you probably downloaded a new buggy codec that's taken precedence over a good one. You can remove and edit settings on codecs from the Video Compression Codecs entry of the Devices tab of the Multimedia dialog in Control Panel.

yo m8, try to install windows media player 10.
Its has a bit better sound quality and it may solve your problems because it will ovewrite almost completly your old version.

I have gotten this problem in the past and found it
to be caused by the hard drive being in PIO mode rather
than DMA. I switched it back to DMA and all was good.
You may have to toggle it if it set for DMA but is still in
PIO. One time I even had to uninstall the problem IDE
channel and reboot to reinstall it. Again, afterward all
was fine. If you don't know what PIO or DMA is, you can
read here & here for explanations on what they are and
why this happens.
