And thirdly, words like "please" and "thank you" are often helpful - all of the board users/helpers are unpaid volunteers, and no-one likes being ordered about by a stranger...

First of all, typing in all capital letters is considered shouting, please try to refrain from that.
If you look at the boldfaced text, you will notice that I did say please. I don't think a thank you is in order unless the user has acknowledged it. I realize that board members are unpaid volunteers as I have been here for a while to know this. I did not order anyone to do anything. I asked in what is considered to be polite.
If I was ordering anyone anything, It would probably go something like this: "Go get your vision checked
please.
Thank you!"
