If you feel that being in a popular channel will help, try
/list >300 and then choose one of the top channels. If you're on a big network you could get away with
/list >500. You can keep pinging yourself with a timer,
/timer 0 300 .ctcp $me ping where '300' is 5 minutes (300 seconds).
