Depends on the applet. I would say that most do give a version reply. I know that CR and Microsoft Chat Java and J-Pilot give replies.
Just curious but why do you want to kick those using java applets? They are probably a more secure way of chatting as you cannot pass on or collect/be affected by trojans that propagate on IRC.
