The character map does not work for symbols, they still have to have CtrlS in front of them.
Unicode is unrelated to Pirch's ctrl+s. If you want to use symbols then do so via the character map, as argv0 suggested. Do not, however, attempt to use characters before 0xFF (255) as those will always be taken from your current font. To type a unicode heart use Alt+9829.
