I think spam used to refer specifically to unwanted advertisments. However, I think the definition has expanded to describe unwanted messages in general, not just advertising. When I think of spam on IRC, it includes actual advertising (selling a product), and 'advertising' the name of another network or channel with the goal of luring people away from their current network or channel. I wouldn't consider flooding to be spam, otherwise if someone came in and sent a lot of messages advertising their network, it would be called 'spam spam' instead of 'spam flood'. As for displaying the song you are listening to, I don't consider that spam.. I just consider it annoying. In general, no one cares what music anyone else is listening to. It's like showing off pictures of your vacation.. no one really cares. :P
