In most cases this is because you have tried to connect to a server that doesnt exist (perhaps you mistyped it) or is down. By using your favorite search engine, find the website for the network you are trying to connect to and look at their list of linked servers. Make a note of a few of them, (Since things change, the server list that comes with mIRC and even a networks website can be inaccurate at times)
and try to connect to them by typing in your main mIRC window:
/server theserver.info.here
like: /server dudley.irc.net (thats a fake one so dont try it)

Since it could be the entire network is down, try connecting to a different one to see if it works.

Try turning your scripts off.

Its possible that you/your isp are having dns probs, and you may need to connect to the ip rather than the domain name of the server. Like: /server 123.456.789.123
You can try getting that from /dns theserver.info.here (altho it may not work if you are having dns probs) or try checking their website.

It could just be the server is full, try another one

Some networks, like DALnet, have set their "round robin"/ Random (irc.dal.net), to not resolve correctly, so you will need to try connecting to a specific server. Again, check their websites or various sites on the web that keep track of server connections. (one site for DALnet servers is here and another is here )

Another possibility is that you have mIRC or the server ports blocked in firewall/router (yes, that includes the firewall in winxp). Server ports: 6660-6669, 7000-7001 and port 113 for identity

If your connection is timing out, you could try in mIRCs options file(or view, depending on version)/options/connect/options click on RETRY and increase the line "if not connected in ___ secs" a little bit ( i use 60 secs)

For details of other connection errors, please see this thread

If the prob is 10053 (software caused disconnect) then do a search here, all forums, expand the date range, using 10053 as search term. This seems to be very common (especially during dcc for xp users). There isnt any one-solution-fits-all, but you will find things that have worked for others. More specifically, see if this sticky thread helps you out, it has almost all advice we can give.

i get the same thing with that ip, so i would guess its down or no longer connected or not for use. try:
/server irc.webchat.org
Posted By: ParaBrat Re: Unable to Connect - 10/11/03 04:38 AM
the "Too many connections from your host" means there are too many ppl trying to connect from the same host. Undernet usually only allows 2-3 connections from the same host. Could be firewall/proxy/bnc or your isp showing too many ppl from the same host.

check out their forum at http://www.undernet.org/forum/index.php

Thanx if u can..

Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 16/12/03 05:25 PM
Firstly, if you remember what it was you changed, simply change it back. Make sure you have port 6667 open, and preferably port 6667-7000 - you can only connect to the ports you have open and which are configured with the server (port 6667 is open for just about every server on IRC).

Secondly, if there is a "Reset" or "Reset defaults" button with that Firewall, click it, then try to connect. If not, then only if you know how you can always try reinstalling the Firewall completely - there should be help files with that Firewall given the manufacturer, and that should have instructions on how to reinstall (or uninstall -> install).

You can also click here for a technical explanation of that error message.

A Search of the Forums will not do too much good I'm afraid, there have not been too many people with that error message (thought that might save you a little time).

Good luck, hope you get connected, and happy chatting smile

sunday december 21 i was on a chat room and my connection was close because of a software, i don't know what software close it but since that day i can't log in to the server, i ask other and says that its working, i have check the 4 servers and still no connection because of time out, the firewall is not the problem since i always have it, i have turn it off but still unable to connect, can someone help me? confused
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 24/12/03 02:43 PM
It would be better to know:

1) What the error message is.
2) What version of mIRC you're using.
3) What version of Windows you're using.

Remember, you can check out a number of error messages and their meanings here.

You may also like to check for viruses and try and investigate what program might have caused the shut down. There are quite a few free trojan/virus scanners out there, including SwatIT and The Cleaner. A good virus scanner is Grisoft's AVG or for a free online scan, try Trendmicro.

If you have mIRC 6.12 and Sys Reset script, delete Sys Reset and reboot. You can also run a Search and expand to 'All Forums' and 'All Posts' for best results.

G'luck, hope you get online soon.

Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 27/12/03 04:25 AM
It could be problems with your ISP, although if that were the case I would imagine other programs would be experiencing problems too (including Internet Explorer)

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

Click on the Internet connection you're currently using and see if the IP settings are correct. Right click it, and click 'Properties' and see if everything seems OK there. If you're unsure, phone up your ISP and check with them. Whilst you're talking to them you might want to inform them of your minor plight and see if they can help you. It could be that some sort of hardware settings were uninstalled or reset, especially if you're a cable user.

You should by now have read and followed the instructions posted on my previous link to Merlin's post about common IRC error messages. To make sure, do them again smile

"Check the obvious first: check that the destination address is a valid IP address. If you used a hostname, did it resolve to the correct address? If the hostname resolution uses a local host table, it's possible you resolved to an obsolete address. Can you ping that hostname?

Do you have a router configured? Is the router up and running (check by pinging it, and then ping an address on the other side of it)? Try a traceroute to the destination address to check that all the routers are functioning.

Check your subnet mask. If you don't have the proper subnet mask, your network system may treat a local address as a remote address (so it forwards addresses on the local subnet to the router, rather than broadcasting an ARP request locally), or visa versa.
"

Your Subnet mask should be visible when you click on your Internet connection in the 'Network Connections' area I mentioned earlier in this post.

I hope you manage to get your problem sorted soon :-)

Try another server on the network (if there is one) or wait to see if it comes back up.

This goes on forever and ever, or rather, until it hits 99 retries and stops.

It's only started doing this the past few days, and only for the irc.mircx.com server. I can connect to kechara.sorcery.net (the other server I use) just fine.

I am on a router with my roommate, we are not on an uni line, and I know for a fact that my computer is not firewalled. She is having the same problems I am. My roomie thought it was the BitTorrents we had going and suggested we connect to IRC when we didn't have any running, but that didn't solve our problem at all.

Is the mircx server just down or could it be something wrong on our end?

Posted By: ParaBrat Re: Unable to Connect - 10/02/04 07:43 AM
When you can get on other networks/servers but not one in particular, logically that indicates the problem is with that network/server. It isnt uncommon for networks/servers to have problems and be hard or impossible to get on for a period of time. Since several ppl have reported the exact same problem over the past few days with mircx, i'd check on their website for any info about it.

mIRC isnt connected with the administration of any network, so we cant know whats going on behind the scenes any more than you can.

I cannot connect to any server and any attempt to gets me this message:

I understand from the common connection errors that this is a problem with my machine, but am unsure as to go about fixing the problem. Any suggestions?

Hi. I'm having a little problem connecting through my firewall. It's "McAfee Personal Firewall +", which to the best of my knowledge hasn't been mentioned here before.

I've messed with the firewall settings, but nothing seems to work, and I tried every port from 6667-7001. I'm assuming that basically means I'm screwed if I can't change which ports my firewall is blocking, but I thought I'd check with you guys to see if there is any way around this. Thanks for your time.
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 09/03/04 05:01 AM
Well, I don't use McAffee, but make sure that you have no other firewalls enabled because they may be clashing. If you have XP make sure you disable its firewall - see these instructions.

Otherwise, try the McAfee support FAQ or ask their support team a question.

Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 18/03/04 09:58 AM
A K-line is a ban from a server. In this case a reason is not specified, to it is impossible for us to tell you why. You might want to try another server and see if you can connect then - see GalaxyNet's server list.

Remember that the K-line may not be aimed at you, it could just be aimed at someone else who uses your ISP (Internet Service Provider). For example, if you are with AOL, your hostname might be ABC5D12B.ipt.aol.com. If a K-line is set on *aol.com then anyone who's hostname ends with 'aol.com' (i.e. any customers of AOL) is affected. This works with all hostnames, not just AOL (this is just an example).

As for us on these boards, there is nothing we can do about it. Connecting to a server is a priviledge, not a right - you can be k-lined from any server at any point, without prior notice or warning, and with no reason. This is of course a rarity as people want users to come to their networks, but it's valid. Read http://www.mirc.co.uk/help/conflicts.html.

You should also see this sticky thread.

Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 28/03/04 04:17 PM
Hi there,

In order for us to help you, you will need to post what error message you are receiving. Make sure you read all the posts in this thread and see if anything applies to you. Also include:

1) What version of mIRC you are using.
2) What Operating System (95, 98, XP, ME etc) you are using.
3) If you have any Firewalls installed.
4) If you are using a router, and what make.

Also make sure you read the Common IRC Errors post and run a Forum Search. With the search feature make sure you expand to 'All Forums' and 'All Posts' for best results - also make sure you use concise search terms.

Finally, make sure you try to connect to multiple servers/networks to see if it's a problem with a specific server/network or if it really is "anything".

Regards,
Posted By: Le_Fly_2003 Re: Unable to Connect - 28/03/04 04:41 PM
1) What version of mIRC you are using.

6.14

2) What Operating System (95, 98, XP, ME etc) you are using.

xp pro

3) If you have any Firewalls installed.

yes norton 2004 and zone alarm (but has worked fine with both of these before)

4) If you are using a router, and what make.

no
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 28/03/04 04:46 PM
Zone Alarm shouldn't be an issue, but disable it just incase. Norton Personal Firewall should prevent IRC access but gives you an option to allow connections when you try and connect (first time) - if you've done this, again, no problems should occur. However, once again, disable this to make sure it's not the issue.

So, now that you have both ZA and Norton disabled, try and connect.

If it still does not connect you need to include the error message you are receiving.

i uninstalled zone alarm its worked with norton b4 so no changes there

the error is

[17:52] * Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)

[17:52] * Connect retry #1 irc.dal.net (6663)

thanks 4 helping me
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 28/03/04 05:12 PM
Try another server address. Due to attacks that DALnet faced, and due to the fact that many attack bots are coded to point to the irc.dal.net address, DALnet closed off their main server pool. It does sometimes work I have found, but more often than not you will have problems with it.

You can get a list of DALnet servers here, but I recommend serverpronto.dal.net for now.

Hope this works!

Unfortunately, we on this board have no affiliation with any channel, server or network. We have no ability to remove any bans you may have on a network, nor any capability to inform you how long the ban is due to last.

If the network staff cannot accurately inform you, then that is due to their own disorganization. I suggest checking out the network's website and finding the email address for the highest authority of the network (Often something like 'Executive Board' etc). Seeing as bans from networks are usually closer to 24/48 hours, try again in 22 hours as one of those IRC Operators said.

Best of luck with getting back online smile

Regards,
i really cannot connect to an irc server and i think its something with my acutal internet settings please help
It's really hard to help you based on that one simple post - it's easier to help if you let everyone know the following information:

- What version of Windows you're using (95/98/ME/XP etc.)
- What connection you have (Dial up, broadband, etc.)
- What version of mIRC you're using.
- What the exact errror message you're receiving is.
- What network/port you're using to connect.
- If you have any problems with any other functions (accessing web pages, logging on to MSN Messenger and the like)
- Any firewalls/routers that you have running

If you have a firewall and a router, it's a good idea to disable the firewall, then try to connect - if you can, you know that the firewall is the issue. If you still can't connect, turn the firewall back on and disable the router and try to connect again. If you can, you know that's the problem! Basically, it's a matter of going through each of the likely problems and using your powers of deduction to work out what it is.

Once you know what it is, it's easy to work on it and try and pinpoint the exact issue and indeed fix it - whether we can do that for you though is another matter, as it's not always down to mIRC itself.

Regards,
I cnt connect while firewall enable in WINXP.

Is there any solution? Coz the're alot of WORMS lurking around out there.
I've enabled the XP Firewall several times (I still do use it) and it's never prevented actually connecting to a server. Disable the firewall and then try and connect (if you're a dialup user make sure you reconnect first) - if you can't connect then it's not the XP firewall causing the issues.

What error message are you receiving when you try to connect? You can probably get information on whatever it is in this post.

If you read all that information, and you find that it definitely, 100% certainly IS the XP firewall, then feel free to post again and seek help on Microsoft's Support site.

G'luck smile

"well i am behind a firewall at school and i can't get to the server to set the router or anything"

It is highly likely access is restricted. You will have to speak to the head of the IT Dept. if there is one, or some other teacher in order to get it sorted. If they are not prepared to help you then that is their perogative and we cannot help you evade their policies.

You need to open at least two ports in the range, preferably in the range of 1024-5000 although not mandatory. You need to set the opened ports in ALT+O > Connect > Options > [Advanced...] (mIRC 6.14).

G'luck!

Please help as I am new and dont know what to do.
What do I do if there's this message coming up:
/dccserver +sc on 59
I did that but all it shows is:
* DCC Server is on (59,Send,Chat)
I dont know what to do next. An I on the right track? What should I do next to connect to whoever?
Thanks
Posted By: ParaBrat Re: Unable to Connect - 29/05/04 04:21 PM
What you did with that command was to enable dcc server to listen on port 59 for sends and chats. To read about dcc server, in any mIRC window type /help dcc and scroll down to that part. The other info on that help page should answer your questions (and do please read the part referred to there about accepting files on IRC) and you can also read more info by typing /help sending and receiving files . The mIRC DCC Server listens for direct connections to your IP address from other mIRC clients. You got the msg to do that from whoever you were requesting the file from because they want to use dccserver on port 59.

Since you are new, i feel i should warn you. Accepting files from ppl you dont know and trust completely is not a good idea. Many files are infected or are illegal to share, and some networks and providers frown on mass filesharing. Obviously i dont know specifically what files you are trying to get or from whom, but for everyone's sake please exercise caution. Be aware that on this forum we dont help with mass filesharing questions.

Posted By: ParaBrat Re: Unable to Connect - 06/06/04 03:32 AM
Its pretty hard to answer your question without some details. First, do you mean that your provider blocks IRC access? Many schools and businesses do that, and we wont help you evade their policies if thats what you mean.

Otherwise: have you tried the suggestions in this thread? (like trying different servers/networks/etc) What exactly happens when you try to connect?

Windows 2000
Cable
mIRC v6.12
* Unable to connect to server (Connection refused)
Every network:6667-7000
No other problems with Internet

I've had this error before, on and off, normally I can connect again after a few hours, but this time its been 3 days, and I'm getting a little worried. I can 'see' the server (pinged it, worked fine..), but when I try connecting through mIRC, jIRC, conference room, vIRC, kIRC, sIRC...(I've tried ALOT, on two different os's) it gives me that blasted error, which is supposedly the easiest to solve.. (I made sure to read everything I could find before posting)

One of my friends said that my Ip was probably blocked from the entire IRC community, 'hammering IP', I think he termed it, but he said it was only temporarily (which explains the 2-3 hour intteruptions before, but this doesn't seem temporary right now!)

Do you have a firewall/router? Do you connect through a proxy?

Connection Refused is the server actively refusing your connection, and as you've tried with several different IRC clients I doubt it's an mIRC program. As you're fairly sure it's not your ISP I guess there's something wrong in your computer somewhere along the line! You might try upgrading to the latest version of mIRC (6.15).

Just an FYI, you only have 2 hours to edit your post from when you first posted it smile

1. Its not the software, since i've updated MIRC, and tried several others.
2. Its not my ISP, because someone I know with the same ISP can connect fine
3. Its not my computer, since I can connect through an alternate program that routes me through someone elses IP, while still using my computer

The only other thing I can think of that would block me is IRC itself, blocking my individual IP out.

Not much use in cross-posting Scriptor, your thread has been answered here.

I know it can be annoying when you can't connect, I've been here several times, but posting twice over the forum isn't going to get you helped any better or faster. The same people that will see your other thread will see this post, and have the same answers! Cross posting can also irritate others and get a hostile response.

1. 6.15

2. XP Pro

3. no firewall

4. Linksys BEFSR81 router

the gist of the problem is that i am unable to connect to any servers. the message i get is "unable to connect to server (connection refused)"

I have read all the help files and searched for the problem and been unable to find anything that pertains specifically to my problem.

Any help would be most appreciated.

- just to clarify, have you tried servers on more than one network?
-have you tried using a server's ip instead of domain name?
-can you connect if you disable your router?

Posted By: NightCrawler8283 Re: Unable to Connect - 03/07/04 12:00 AM
are you having trouble with any other internet based programs such as email or popular instant messengers such as MSN or AIM? if those work. then ur problem is most likely the server your trying to connect to using mirc. try some random servers on some larger networks such as DALnet or Undernet

When you say "every" server, have you tried other networks than DALnet as all I see in your paste is DALnet servers. You might try irc.undernet.org or irc.quakenet.org and see if it's every network, if you haven't tried that already.

If you absolutely have to connect through a proxy then you need to edit mIRC's proxy settings. This is accessible at ALT+O > Connect > Firewall. Extensive help can be found at http://www.mirc.co.uk/help/proxies.html.

Do you actually need to connect through a proxy? Most people do not...do you know what a proxy is?

All the available help I could possibly give is in the URL I linked to, I don't know anymore than what is on that page as I have never connected through a proxy myself.

If you had issues connecting to AIM perhaps it's an ISP issue? Your ISP might be getting attacks? Try contacting them and see if they've had any problems recently, or are currently having problems. You might even let them know you're having issues connecting to IRC and some other Internet services such as AIM.

You may also want to use our Search feature and search for relevant help. If nothing in this thread helps, plenty of other topics have been started about this error message and other general connection issues. Expand to 'All Forums' and 'All Posts' for best results.

what can i do to reconect?
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 18/08/04 12:22 PM
A G-line a global ban on the network, so you are banned from the entire network on all of its servers. A K-line is a local ban on a server, and so you can connect to another server on that network and it should let you on.

K-lines and G-lines have nothing to do with mIRC - We have no control over them, and the only person or persons that can deal with it are the staff of that particular IRC network. Check out this thread for further information.

Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 19/08/04 09:08 PM
The problem with places that have networks set up such as colleges, universities, work-places and so forth, is they often have network firewalls that block a lot of the ports needed for IRC access. This is in fact often intentional due to the dangers that IRC could bring to a network (for example, obtaining a virus from DCC).

You'll need to talk the teacher/professor/etc in charge of that area of the college (computer/internet setup) and see if they can help you. Not much we can do this side.

Or is it a GameSurge specific issue? Can you connect to other IRC networks?

I keep on getting an error that says something about my user being baned and it also says something about clones?
Whats up?
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 21/08/04 12:21 AM
For information related to being banned from a server/network, please see this thread. By 'user' it might mean your username/identd - see if this thread has anything of relevance to what you're experiencing.

Clones are multiple connections to a server/network - make sure you're not bringing bot(s) on to the server/network. If you're connecting via a network (i.e. cyber cafe, work, school, college etc.) then it could be too many people are trying to connect to IRC at the same time.

Posted By: WilD Re: Unable to Connect - 02/09/04 12:26 AM
Ok, i've had a look through all the threads on these message boards and no-one has had a problem like mine (as far as I can see). I'm a 17 year old student and my dad found my younger brother using mIRC when he was meant to be studying. We have a d-link wireless router (I had a look on their page and can't find one that looks like ours) and I run the latest version of mIRC. I get the unable to connect (connection refused) problem and I think it's because my dad has blocked ports for any server i join (6667-7001 i think). I think this as if I try to use any other program than mIRC (x-chat etc) it still can't join. I was wondering, does anyone have any idea how to get past these blockages at the router? I specifically want to be able to join irc.solidirc.com crazy. Anyone got any ideas to help me here? I have no access whatsoever to the router (I wouldn't want to be caught anyway) . I was talking to an op on that server w/ a friends computer and he said I could try using SSL encryption so I downloaded all that but I forgot the port he suggested blush. Someone plz help me get rid of these withdrawal symptoms!
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 02/09/04 12:28 AM
Sorry, we don't help with evading blocks placed by schools, colleges, universities, workplaces or, indeed, annoying parents.

You'll have to speak to your dad.

I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help me here, but I figure this is the best place to go for help with mIRC.

Basically, I can't connect to any servers on IRC. I believe it started a few weeks ago while I was still at home. I figured it would get better cause maybe a server was down or something but it never did. Now I'm back at school and it still isn't working. I can't connect to any server.

It gives the basic message:
"[19:14] * Connecting to irc.gamesurge.net (6667)
-
[19:14] * Unable to connect to server (Connection refused)
-"
I can't figure out what would be wrong with it. I've had IRC for over a year and it always worked. Any ideas?

A few days ago, my internet connection wasn't working properly and I had to reset my modem in order to get it to work. I think my ISP may have done some upgrades or something.

Now, I am unable to connect to a whole bunch of servers that I used to be able to. The message that I get is " Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)" Most of these connect on port 6667. I know it is not my internet connection, as I can use IE and AIM. I was also able to connect to a server that opened on port 6665.

If my ISP has put up some sort of block, what needs to be done in order to get MIRC working again?

Using: MIRC 6.16
Windows 2000 Pro
Cable modem - Linksys

Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 11/09/04 05:24 PM
Best thing to do is to contact your ISP and see if they have you firewalled or have some sort of block on port 6667. The fact you could connect via 6665 is weird. Tried resetting your modem again? Have you tried several networks? That error just means mIRC has got fed up with waiting for a connection to be established, and so has given up. It's more of an error telling you why the connection attempt has been stopped, not why you can't connect in the first place.

Ok guys... IMHO m$ has fubared something here...

2 days ago XP SP1 irc worked fine.

Yesterday I did a fresh install with SP2. Guess what? IRC doesnt work... I have heard of this issue with a couple other people. Here is the error:

* Connecting to irc.gamesurge.net (6667)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Software caused connection abort)

This happens imeadiately after typing the command to join ALL irc servers. I have tried to screw around with the Firewall settings in XP but it does not seem to matter.

Things i have tried:
1) Turning on the firewall and allowing port 6667 and 6668.
no dice
2) Turning off the firewall
No dice
3) Turning off 2 key services:
-Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
-Security Center
No dice

I have a cisco 2514 that i am using and a Cisco PIX 501 Firewall. Nothing has changed on either one of these devices therefore i doubt altering these pieces of equipment will prove useful. Ideas? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Philosophical entreaties?

Can someone explain the steps that I need to take in detail. I have Windows XP SP2 and a D-link router. I have opened the TCP ports 4000-4004 for DCC in the Windows XP firewall. Do I also need to change port settings in my router? If so, is it the same TCP 4000-4004? mIRC seems to want to connect to servers using ports 6665-6669. I've been able to get every other type of communications client working on my computer, but not mIRC. I'm a noob and can't figure this one out. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Each time I try to connect to ANY server, I get this error. I'm able to use Java applets to connect wherever I want to, and mIRC worked up until yesterday, but ever since I accidently flooded someone, I've been having problems. At first, I was getting an error saying that I had been flooded every time I tried to connect to any server, so I DLed version 6.16 hoping that 6.15 might have an error in it that was causing my problems, but now I am getting the Unable to connect error. Any help would be appreciated.
Posted By: Lon_Diffenderfer Re: Unable to Connect - 05/10/04 11:39 PM
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I am still unable to connect. I upgraded the firmware for my router. I also performed the following:

In Windows firewall I added DCC entries for ports 4000 through 4004 for both TCP & UDP protocols. I also added Identd using port 113 & the TCP protocol.

In the router, I added the 4000-4004 ports using both TCP & UDP protocols.

In iMRC, under "Connect" => "Options" I checked only DCC & entered "1024" in "First" & "4004" in "Last". I am still unable to connect to any server. If I cannot get connected, I am going to ask for a refund. The reason I purchased the program (a second time) is because it worked on my Windows 98 machine without much hassle at all. So far, it has been nothing but a headache on XP.

Hello i have a problem.

I have a router now and since i have this i can't dl anymore from port 6667 and 6668. It only works with port 6669. But the problem is that not every network accepts 6669.

I tried to forward the 6667 and further in the router but that also doen't work.

But how can I download now from a server which don't accept port 6669?

Can't you do something so that every server acceps this port?

thanks....
Posted By: ParaBrat Re: Unable to Connect - 27/10/04 09:04 PM
This thread is more about being unable to connect to a network by way of their servers. Your issue appears to be more related to a known dcc prob when you are connected on port 6667. That isnt related to mIRC, but is due to some routers having other uses for 6667 and causing some probs with dcc. (see cant dcc thread )

mIRC is software used to chat. It has nothing at all to do with any networks or servers. The choice of what ports they decide to use is totally up to them and their circumstances. We cant do anything about it.

All of a sudden i can't connect to the Rizon server. I keep getting a message saying "Unable to connect to server (connection refused)".

I dont understand this because i have been on it everyday untill yesterday. My homie from USA does'nt have any problems connecting to the server (im from Denmark).

What could be wrong?? confused
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 28/10/04 09:06 AM
'Connection refused' is a common error - there have been lots 'n lots of threads about it, use the Search feature, expand to 'All Forums' and 'All Posts' for best results.

It's worth noting that Rizon have been having some DNS issues recently, perhaps that's related?

Also try:
  • Disabling the Windows XP Firewall (Service Pack 1: www.mirc.org/xpdcc | Service Pack 2: www.mirc.org/xpdccsp2)
  • Connecting to a different port (try 6667, 6668, 7000)
  • Try an individual server address. Check www.rizon.net for a list of servers.
  • Disabling antiviruses and other 3rd party firewalls, and then restarting mIRC. (disable them only temporarily)
  • Try /dns server.name.here and connect to the IP of the server.
  • Try other IRC networks to see if it's specific to Rizon, or if it's your end that is the issue. For example, /server irc.quakenet.org.
  • If all else fails, close all other 3rd party programs to make sure it is no interference from them - MSN Messenger, Kazaa, all of it.

Connection refused is that the server refuse you to connect to it.. i would suggest try another server? try one as close to you as possible.. as an example, im from sweden, then i try use a swedish server.. *.se ... England *.uk .. USA *.us and so on.. and also try a diffrent port.. 6667 is often used ..

I have a question that I need help for. In the past I have been able to connect to mulitple channels at once and have 2 or more downloads going. The past few days I can only download from one at a time. If it attemps to start a second download, it will time out. When one download is finished I have no problem receiving the next download infact the one one that just would not allow me to connect.

What might be affecting this problem for me as it has only happened recently.

first, have you tried other servers or even other networks? go to the networks website (usually easily found using google.com) and check out their current server list. suppose they show a server named irc.dudley.net, you would type in your main mIRC window /server irc.dudley.net (dont forget the /) For info about other networks to try, check out sites like www.searchirc.com

Colleges and universities (Etc.) usually have firewalls setup across the network. You will need to speak to the network administrator of your college and ask him/her if they can allow IRC access.

regardless of what server i try connecting to i always get this:

unable to connect to server (software caused connection abort)

i talked to my college network admin, he said the college network is not the problem as he just connected to some of the same MIRC servers i was unable to connect to.

I turned my windows firewall off, same problem. any ideas on what the problem could be?
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 24/01/05 06:41 PM
Have you looked at the Software caused connection abort sticky thread, that's almost everything we have on the topic. It can occur for a lot of reasons and sometimes it's specific to your computer setup, meaning there's not much we can suggest other than what others have reported (which is all in that thread).

Hope you get it sorted. If you sort it out, and it ends up being nothing in that thread, do feel free to contribute it - your solution may help others smile

thanks for your help, i changed to 6670 and just a different error message. I looked into some other networks, most still gave me the same error, but now i'm finding a few networks who's servers do work. I guess i'll be content with only a few working.

Ok, I don't have time to read all these 1000 posts lol, so here it goes nice and simple, I use Packetnews.com and when i click on a packet it wont connect to mIRC no matter which one i go to none of them will connect to the server, I thought maybe it is was down for a day or 2 but its been goin on for like a week. Thanks, anyone who can help me out email me at dominicanpapi809@aol.com and let me know, I appreciate it.

Hi peeps. im running a network at home. Network is running fine.... website browsing works. When i configure mirc from the client pc i get "unable to connect to firewall"

Using win 98 SE
mirc 5.91
Posted By: nils Re: Unable to Connect - 09/03/05 12:34 AM
Ok, I have a really strange error that I haven't found anywhere else on this thread.

My mIRC won't connect unless the mIRC folder is put in another specific folder and is named mIRC. This isn't a problem when I do my usual chatting. Now I'm experimenting a little with a bot, but to run this bot and have the possibility to test it I have to connect to mIRC from two different folders (right?). One for my own user and one for the bot. This is not possible. The error message I get is:

* Connect retry #96 elsene.be.eu.undernet.org (6668)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Socket is not connected)
-
* Connect retry #97 193.254.240.246 (6668)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Socket is not connected)
-

and so on...

I've tried to delete and reinstall several times but the same error occurs. It's not because of the bot, it doesn't matter if scripts are used or not. I'm not using firewalls. I've tried many different servers. All goes fine with my original mIRC, but the mIRC which is in "wrong" folder can never connect.

I'm using mIRC 6.16 and winxp.

Does anyone have an idea?

I am running Zone Alarm Pro with Mirc 6.1 and when i try to connect to a server lately i get this error message, 'Firewall: Unable to find firewall address' what does this mean and why did it start all of the sudden?

Perhaps a script enabled the Firewall option? You may have enabled it accidentally I guess, or someone else with access to your computer did it. Either way, type /firewall off and your problem should be solved smile

What is the message exactly? Chances are it's your Firewall giving you the error, mIRC doesn't mention any specific firewalls, nor does it say that a firewall for sure is blocking anything.

Make sure there are no options in your firewall config to allow IRC.

Hi, I recently downloaded Mirc because my clan needs a registered channel to participate in Enemy Down Counter Strike.
However, I am having problems connecting. The host I wish to use is quakenet. I have enabled irc to access the internet like all other online programs I use but still I can only connect to the server on my Dad's desktop which is ok but unconvenient.
I have disabled the windows xp firewall ages ago so i dont think that will be the problem. Can anybody suggest what is?
Posted By: Onias Re: Unable to Connect - 29/03/05 09:17 AM
Hi all.

Well, I am cursed with the same problem as many other people. At the beginning of my arduous technical journey I knew nothing about configuring routers, forwarding IPs, and all that jive -- and now, well, I still don't know very much, but I've done a heck of a lot to try and resolve this problem!

The specs:
-D-Link 624 router
-WinXP on SP2
-mIRC 6.16
-Cable internet

With the help of a trusted technical advisor (a.k.a my best friend), I tried to address the DCC send/chat issue through the following methods.

-We cleared the locahost info as specified at the beginning of this thread in mIRC
-We set the ports to 5001-5005 in the connect advanced options
-These ports as well as 1024-1025 and 6060 were forwarded and allowed in the router's configuration
-Ident port 133 was also forwarded/allowed

None of the above worked, so we set a DMZ for my machine, essentially bypassing the router's firewall. That failed. We then disabled the windows firewall and my virus scanner, that failed to produce any positive results as well. I'm not behind any additional firewalls or proxy servers. I am able to receive files over IRC and receive a DCC chat, but not send files or send a DCC chat. My DCC works fine on my PC, the one that is directly connected to the internet, but my laptop that receives its connection from the wireless router is suffering DCC problems.

I have only one question left: what the frilly heck is going on? Is it SP2, the router (which I heard is flawed in some way), or mIRC itself? All of the above? I'm really lost at this point.
Posted By: Aureal Re: Unable to Connect - 13/05/05 05:06 AM
onias, I'd check to make sure your wireless router doesn't have a built-in firewall. I had that same problem- I was opening the ports on the DSL router, but didn't realize that there was another one on my wireless network router that had to be dealt with as well.

Anyway, now I have a little problem of my own. Last night mIRC just stopped being able to connect to any server. I just keep getting the "Unable to connect to server" error over and over. I can connect just fine with x-chat and a java client, but not mIRC. I've tried getting the latest version of mIRC, but no dice. I've tried connecting to a server with the IP rather than hostname, but still no luck. The only difference that I can discern between now and yesterday, when it worked, is that my IP seems to have changed. Any ideas what could have caused this?

I'm behind a firewal from school, but use hopster to get around that. I've been using this for almost 3 months and all of a sudden I get k-lined on the main galaxynetservers. I've send them an email asking why they have k-lined me now. But I was still wondering what the Poison drone message meant, and of course if that means I need to do something against it. Any help is greatly appreciated. smile
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 22/05/05 01:16 PM
A "drone" is generally a reference to an infection whereby your computer connects a "drone" (bot) to an IRC network which then automatically joins a specified channel, and it's controlled by the "botmaster". Once numerous people are infected there will be more drones, and they can be used to flood channels or DDoS websites/users.

If nobody were infected with trojans then the ability to DDoS would be crippled. So please not just now, but regularly in the future, check your system for viruses/trojans if you don't already and help the Internet in its struggle smile

A number of antivirus/firewall resources can be found in this thread.

I have my WinXP firewall ON and I can now connect.

I used to get the "unable to resolve server" error message
so i went to the mIRC website and downloaded the server.ini file from the main page..

immediately after
I recieved the "unable to resolve firewall address"

To fix, under Tools->Options->Connect->Firewall
Even if you have NONE selected, change around the "Socks4" "Socks5" "Proxy" settings...I had Socks4 originally and changed to Proxy and this fixed everything. This works with the firewall on.

So in summary, select NONE and Proxy
I think the default is NONE and Socks4

Hope this helps someone

You must elaborate on your problem to get help. What has mIRC bot to do with selling CDs? What error message are you receiving? "This" website isn't working for you? What website? What has a website got to do with mIRC or selling CDs? Have you searched for "other" websites with Google? What other websites do you mean? What version of mIRC do you use? What exactly is your problem?!

That means that the server is banning you. Read what the reason is and what it tells you to do about it. Usually, you should contact the e-mail they provide or if there isn't an e-mail provided, go to their website and check there for the contact information.

If you were kicked for a virus/trojan, the ban will stay on for 24-72 hours usually, even if you remove the virus/trojan.
Posted By: agnesquek Re: Unable to Connect - 31/07/05 03:25 PM
thanks for the reply.

I did get "unbanned" after 24 hours. However, I was kicked out again on several occasions with the same problem (poison drone). I have updated my virus scan and scanned my system several times and it was not able to locate any virus. Not sure why the server ban me again....

I tried to uninstall my MIRC, but was not able to do so. I recieved pop-ups indicating that the MIRC program was running in the background even though I did not open the application.

please assist. thanks mucho

Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 31/07/05 03:58 PM
Still sounds like you're infected, mIRC does not run itself, nor does it run in the background after you've closed it.

Scan with more than one virus scanner, no ONE detects all variants of all viruses.

If you're sure you're not infected, it's got nothing to do with mIRC, it's the poor method of the IRC network to detect infected drones, so contact the network that you're getting banned from.

Please do not use the 'Notify Moderator' button to get attention to your post, moderators are not the only ones that can answer your posts and it doesn't get you answered any faster.

The message you're seeing means you've been banned from the network for spamming (unsolicited advertising). You may have been doing it accidentally if you're infected with an "mIRC virus", or the ban may be placed on your entire ISP and so isn't aimed at you directly but is affecting you anyway.

The only thing you can do is wait until October 6th 2007 or contact the network's IRC Operators for assistance. It has nothing to do with mIRC, you would get the same result using any IRC client. Check out the network's website for contact details. Alternatively, use another network altogether.

G'luck.

Should i contact the operator of that specific server?
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 13/09/05 08:07 PM
Contact the network. Usually you can find the website for the network by just replacing irc. with www. If not, you can try googling for it.

On the website, you should find some form of contact information. Use that and ask them about the ban (provide your dns/ip information). Maybe they will remove it.

'm currently in college right now and I've check with the tech support here. They told me that there isn't any programs blocked at this school. However, I still can't connet to mIRC. I could connect when I was at home so I don't know what's going on.
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 21/10/05 05:42 AM
I don't know why it's suddenly become a fashion, but please stop using the Notify Moderator button to get attention to your post. It's there to report ABUSIVE posts, not to get people to answer you.

Judging from your other post, I'd say your IT dept. is wrong, and has no idea what IRC is, and actually they DO have something blocking IRC. It's quite possibly not intentionally blocking IRC (which is why they may think there's nothing that would be), but the coincidence that you can connect at home but not at college would indicate such a situation. We can't really help you with that.

Check for blocked ports on any router/firewall that you have running. Also, try other networks. There are some good posts about firewalls and routers that you should look through. Just use the Search feature and set it to 1 year or longer.

The thing is, I just recently had to redl mirc and before that it was fine and always worked. Since redling it, it now has this problem
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 25/10/05 05:25 PM
Which probably means it's a firewall problem. The firewall probably was set to allow the previous install, but is blocking the current install. The quick way to determine if that is true would be to temporarily disable the firewall and try. Of course, some firewall software doesn't like to be disabled and can still cause problems, but it would give you an idea.

3) Wait from a few hours to a few months until the ban is automatically removed.

Im normally good at computers, but this is a tricky one.

It says my connection is being refused and you guys tell me to use different servers or ports. How do you change ports or servers?
Posted By: Mentality Re: Unable to Connect - 30/10/05 03:40 PM
When you connect to IRC with mIRC you can use the /server command to connect. See /help /server.

Example: /server irc.dal.net 7000

irc.dal.net is the server, and 7000 is the port. You can change servers by replacing irc.dal.net with another server name, for example, irc.quakenet.net or irc.undernet.org, or an individual server of a particular network - the latter server names are "round robins", meaning they are a generic server name that forward you to a specific server on that network. Individual servers are usually listed on the network's website (example) - so you might do /server mesra.dal.net 7000 to connect to DALnet.

The default port mIRC uses is 6667 - the vast majority of IRC servers support this port. However, sometimes it may be easier to connect on another port, usually 6668, 6669, 7000 or 7001, though it could be a whole host of others. If you have no luck after changing the port 3-4 times, it's likely that it's not going to help at all.

Does that help at all?

Regards,
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 31/10/05 04:36 PM
Ports:
Go check out http://www.portforward.com/

Servers:
Let's look at some DALnet servers...

Hubs (you select one and it tries all servers connected to the hub):
irc.dal.net
us.dal.net
eu.dal.net

Servers (specific servers... lets you use one that you like):
jade.va.us.dal.net

To try a specific server, you first need to know what the server name is. Most networks have a website that lists all the servers. Go look for a listing. When you have one, type:

/server servername

Example:
/server jade.va.us.dal.net

Well, I fixed my issue with Mirc 6.14. It appears that by default most DCC ports are blocked. If you go under options - connections - options - advanced there is are two check boxes, one for DCC and the other for I forget what. But if the DCC check box is checked then the ports for DCC are limited to the input range in the boxes. Mine was limited to 1500 - 5000 port range. I was connected to a client in 6667. So my DCC Gets were not working. I was sometimes able to connect for chat but had no DCC working. After unchecking this box, everything works fine now.

* Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)

and it alternate between the two (timed out and unreachable)

1) What version of mIRC you are using.
v6.16
2) What Operating System (95, 98, XP, ME etc) you are using.
ME
3) If you have any Firewalls installed.
I have Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition
4) If you are using a router, and what make.
Not sure of how to check whether i use a router or not.

I can connect fine to the other server: eg. undernet and dalnet.

Same goes to irc.criten.net.
I can connect to this server before, but recently faced connection problem and getting the same error messages above.

Thank you very much for help.
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 25/11/05 08:01 AM
If you have DSL or a Cable connection, then there might be a router built into the modem. Otherwise you probably would know if you had a router or not, as it is a piece of hardware that allows multiple computers to connect to the internet using a single connection.

The timed out error, means that your computer didn't get a response from the server in a timely manner.

The unreachable error, means that your computer got the response from the server, but the server wasn't able to relay network information. This sometimes happens when a server on a network drops (ie: Net split).

Please note that these aren't the only possibilities, but they are the most common.

Have recently installed mIRC v6.16 on a new PC running Windows XP, it worked fine until I installed a Belkin ADSL Modem with wireless router, now I'm getting the following error message:-

[11:44] Ping? Pong!

Your username is invalid.
Connect with your real username, in lowercase.
If your mail address were foo@bar.com, your username would be foo.
-
[11:44] Closing Link: ******* by Oslo2.NO.EU.undernet.org (USER: Bad username)

The username wasn't changed in mirc at all - so am assuming this is something to do with the modem//router - especially as it's happening with all pc's on the network.

The same problem occurs no matter what network I try to join.

Any help in configuring this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Look up your Belkin router at portforward.com and forward the ports to your computer that are needed for chat (usually 6666-6669 work) and port 113 for ident.

Hello.

I've been trying to connect to _any_ irc server, but it keeps on saying "Connection timed out". I've never had this problem before. I have no firewalls, no anti viruses, and I'm using windows vista. And I'm using the latest mIRC version there is. I tried everything, from using proxyies and trying to go on irc through a web based irc client, to formatting. And nothing worked. I also thought that the problem might be from the isp, I called them and informed them of my problem, and they said that the problem isn't because of them. Oh and, I don't have a router.

Here's what it says:

* Connecting to irc.darkmyst.org (6667)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)
-
* Connect retry #1 66.252.19.229 (6667)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)
-
* Connecting to irc.dalnet.org (6667)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)
-
* Connect retry #1 irc.dalnet.org (6667)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)

And so on, it says that to all of the servers I know. confused

Please help me out! frown
Posted By: Macondo Re: Unable to Connect - 25/02/06 09:57 AM
I tried both servers and darkmyst connected just fine... however, i don't think there's such thing as a dalnet.org network; my guess would be you're trying to connect to irc.dal.net
Posted By: Spieta Re: Unable to Connect - 25/02/06 03:00 PM
I already knew that the problem wasn't from the server itself, I know that the problem is from me. Anyway, that still didn't help me solve my problem.

A connection time out, is a connection time out. :-(

P.S. I just want to get on darkmyst.

I am behind a router ..dont know if that is connecting a problem. But of that should be the case then i should not be able to connect to any server.

I only have one server that I ever connect to irc.jpilot.com. As of last night, I haven't been able to connect to this server at all. Is it down?

Unfortunately, I am a novice so I can't make heads or tails of your directions. I don't even know how it works that I'm able to chat. Is it a common webpage that we're all signing on to? If someone could explain how this works that would be great. Pretend you are talking to a five year old who doesn't know the language. Thanks.
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 26/03/06 04:35 AM
I realize that it's been a couple of hours since your post about irc.jpilot.com, however, I just tried it and connected without any problems. The server must've been down temporarily, or it was having troubles with the DNS resolvers.
Posted By: tholczer Re: Unable to Connect - 26/03/06 06:13 PM
I am still unable to connect and haven't been able for the last two days. I've been trying periodically throughout each day.

What else could be the problem? I haven't changed my settings.
Posted By: tholczer Re: Unable to Connect - 27/03/06 01:37 AM
It says exactly Unable to connect to server and No route to host.
I'm using the best format as quick as I can to see if I can be helped.
- What version of Windows you're using (95/98/ME/XP etc.)
I use Windows XP
- What connection you have (Dial up, broadband, etc.)
DSL modem
- What version of mIRC you're using
6.17
- What the exact errror message you're receiving is.
Unable to connect to server (connection refused)
- What network/port you're using to connect.
6667, correct
- If you have any problems with any other functions
Yes. I can't download things like limewire or other downloadable things sometimes.
- Any firewalls/routers that you have running
Only default Norton Firewall Plus mIRC is set to be an exception. I turned it off and it still didn't work.

Note: Be aware that Windows XP has it's own firewall that needs to be configured/disabled, plus your DSL "modem" most likely has it's own firewall as well (look for it at http://www.portforward.com ).
BUT, the error you're getting (Unable to connect to server (connection refused)) is more likely to be because that particular server doesn't allow connections from either your isp or your country. Try another server within the same network (even that of another country), or another port on the same server (rarely is successful).
No, that didn't help any. Any other suggestions?

visit the URL listed and/or email the address they gave you and reference the Akill ID #. If you've done that already, wait for their response.

If you are sure (well, it's hard to be 100%) NOTHING changed on your end, give them time to work on it. Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 17/07/06 01:43 AM
Your best bet for correctly configuring that suite is to read through the documentation that came with it and/or contact their support staff.

While some of us have knowledge regarding some programs like that, I don't think any of us can have knowledge of all of them.

Sounds like your update also reset some items so that mIRC isn't cleared through the firewall any longer. I don't have Zone Labs Security, but I do seem to recall seeing that name with other similar problems. Try searching this forum for "Zone Labs Security" and extend the time period to 1 month (or longer). The default is 1 week.

Posted By: KyaniteD Re: Unable to Connect - 14/12/06 07:33 AM
Hello,

I'm new to Sysreset and tried to set up a file server. I followed the step-by-step instructions from the help file for quick/basic file server setup.

The problem: People who try to connect get the error message:
Quote:
Client: KyaniteD (xx.xxx.xx.xxx)
Time: Thu Dec 14 02:19:13 2006
-
Acknowledging chat request...
-
Unable to connect
-
DCC session closed

I have set my router to forward the following ports:
59, 113, 6060, 6660-7000

The file server responds to the !list command and advertises correctly.

I myself have no trouble connecting to other people's file servers, resp. downloading from them.

I'm using no proxy, windows firewall and software firewall are deactivated. Antivirus is running, though. [If that should be the problem the file server is not worth the security risk.]

I'm using the Sysreset 2.53 with mIRC v6.14 package on a Windows XP SP2 machine.

Any help or hints how/where to find help are much appreciated.
[On this note, is it possible to do a phrase search here?]

-Kya

Ok, I solved the problem.

In the Options/Connect/Options/Advanced is a range of ports to be used with DCC that needs to be forwarded in the router.

Sorry for the bother.

Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 02/01/07 06:03 AM
This sounds like a script is trying to connect to the internet, and it's not able. Try removing all scripts that you have, or if you're not sure how to do that, start mIRC, then type /!remote off

That will disable any and all scripts. Then try to connect using your normal method.

Actually, it's more likely the #. Spambots use text followed by 2 numbers often for the username, so it's blocked. Alt-O > Connect > Identd > User ID. Try without the number (also, like RusselB mentioned, you can just try with a lowercase G) and see if it works. This has no affect on what nick you use.

I am having a weird problem. I have been using this program for a long time, and it worked fine for me up to last night. I tried to get on today, and I got some weird error message. I tried to reinstall, and got the new version. Now, no matter what server I try to connect to, it tells me "Connection refused." And this is on all servers, I have tried like 10 or more of them. The other posts I have seen haven't said anything that helps me here. I just can't figure it out. Any help would be apperciated.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 29/01/07 02:25 PM
When you reinstall, you need to make sure your firewall and/or router is not blocking the new installation. It may be the same program, but firewalls/routers don't treat it as being the same, so you need to unblock the new installation.

I am new to mIRC and i can't connect to any server. when i start the program.

I just installed mIRC and am using windows vista. Everytime i click on a link it sends me a message stating the following:

windows cannot find 'irc://irc.***********.com' make sure you typed the name correctly and try again.

after this, once i click the "ok" another window appears stating the following:

Internet explorer cannot open this helper application for irc://irc.***********.com. The protocol specified in this address is not valid. Make sure the address is correct, and try again.

Please help me with this.

This has been noted already. It's an issue specific to using mIRC in Vista. For now, you'll need to connect directly from within mIRC and not from your browser.

Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 20/02/07 02:20 AM
Just try other networks. If other networks work fine, then it's a problem on their end and you'll just have to try again later. That's the problem with the smaller networks.

You will need to show the messages you receive when trying to connect for us to be able to help you.

mIRC registration is lifetime. That's what you pay for. Registration on a network is *not* lifetime unless you are always there. Most network registrations will expire in 30 days if you don't connect within that time period. Network registrations are free. Each network can have a different process for registering, changing passwords, or having your password sent to you. You should check the #help channel on the network using another nickname for information on how to do so on your particular network.

Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 02/03/07 06:39 AM
You probably have a DSL modem, not a DNS modem.
Do you have anything else using the internet at the same time?
File sharing programs have been known to use up so much bandwidth, that mIRC is unable to connect with the server in the time allocated.
Also, the server might just be busy, especially if it's on a large network (eg: Undernet).
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 02/03/07 02:14 PM
As mentioned, it's probably a DSL modem. As such, the modem may also be a router. Some routers can also block IRC traffic until you change the settings. You can check http://www.portforward.com/ for the brand and name of your router and try setting it up for mIRC there. Normally that site doesn't explain actually *connecting* to a network, but you can at least see how to get into the settings from that site and then look around for something dealing with IRC.

First off, scrap that "anti-virus" and get a decent one.

Personally, I like AVG Anti-virus, but there are a lot more, and there are references to some of the preferred ones at this topic

As to Permission denied, it might help if we knew just what server you were trying to connect to?
Sometimes if two networks that were merged have difficulties and split, then permission to access Network A using Network B's servers is denied (logically if Network A and Network B aren't working with each other).

personally i try to connect to irchighway, but it not just that, but every server i connect to and i am using the new version program of mirc
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 21/04/07 05:58 AM
I just connected to irchighway using the server configuration that came with mIRC 6.21, as I've not used that network before, and had no real trouble. Significant delay waiting for the Ident server, but still connected and was able to join channels, chat, etc.

just called me stupid, but how to do that i have to no so i won't have this problem ever again
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 22/04/07 01:37 AM
There is no 100% guaranteed solution to this problem, and I can't even give you any suggestions as I had no problems, aside from the lag, connecting.
Posted By: acefgtuil Re: Unable to Connect - 22/04/07 03:53 AM
well can u direct to someone or a faq that will tell me how to connect. Or if there is a troubleshooting on this because no matter what i do i cannot connect. Even if i try every server it won't help. i know i am being an idiot, it just i can always connect even when i didn't know mirc or how to get mangas two years ago

hello, are the irc servers down? I can't connect at the moment:

(09:46:56) Local host: p57A2D779.dip.t-dialin.net (87.162.215.121)
(09:47:17) * Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)
(quakenet: random de server)

yesterday it was ok, but today I can't connect, firewall isn't up.

does somebody have an idea?

That IP seems to be down. Just use the DNS...

I have a new problem, and since this thread exists, I think it goes here. Basically, as of about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I'm unable to connect to any IRC server. I'm not sure why, I can't even connect via jIRC applets, so I don't think it's a problem with my irc.

Windows firewall isn't on as far as I know, and I haven't changed any settings anywhere in XP. I'm on a shared wireless connection, but I'm not sure if that has any bearing, seeing as this problem started fairly recently. I used to leave mIRC on all night without even getting peered out, software causing connection aborts (and this is with AIM on all night, mind you) or any other problems.

When I try to connect, it either gives me 'connection timed out' or 'network unreachable,' which is strange considering I've even tried GameSurge, DALnet, Undernet, and just about anything to see if maybe the 3 servers I connect to are down, which I don't think is the case.

The only thing I can think of is going down to the office of my domicile and requesting a new WEP key to see if maybe that has something to do with it, but since I'm still connected to the internet, I have my doubts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 17/05/07 06:00 AM
You might also want to check to see if the people that are running the wireless router have configured it to block IRC ports. While this isn't common for a household, since you have an office to go to for a WEP key, it's possible that they've done that, possibly not realizing that, in doing so, they're blocking part of your access. They may have done so in order to restrict/eliminate the possibility of someone downloading a virus into the host system, and/or preventing a possible hack via the IRC ports.
Posted By: SecondhandOrgans Re: Unable to Connect - 17/05/07 06:02 AM
Thanks, at least you've given me a direction to point myself towards. I'm not exactly sure who runs the network here, since it's more or less an apartment complex, but I'll try that out first.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 17/05/07 11:26 AM
Yes, it is almost guaranteed to be related to your wireless connection (the router settings).
Posted By: RedRum7575 Re: Unable to Connect - 19/05/07 12:18 AM
Ok, I used mIRC for a good year without any problems. Then back in February I started getting a (Network is Unreachable) error. I have checked my firewall settings and it is letting mIRC go through. Which I don't know why that would be the error anyways, becuase I never changed any settings before it stopped working. I have tried sever different servers and none seem to work... I am using Dial-Up but it hasn't ever given me errors like this that happen randomly. If anybody could point me in a direction to fix this problem I would appreciate it.
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 19/05/07 12:37 AM
Usually that message means that the network has been closed down for some reason. What network were you connecting to? Is the network listed on Search IRC
Posted By: RedRum7575 Re: Unable to Connect - 19/05/07 12:52 AM
I've been using SwiftIRC network, and yes it's on the list

Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 22/05/07 05:39 PM
First thing to do is check with the IT Department and find out if they block IRC ports. If they do, all you can do is ask that they open them, since, if they won't, there's nothing we can help you with, as giving advice on bypassing security is not permitted on these forums.

Every so often i do receive files requested (even from the same person that the connection just failed). I have never had this problem in the past.

Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 29/05/07 02:28 AM
This is the wrong thread of DCC questions... it's for questions regarding connecting to networks. However, in answer to your question, if you are having issues RECEIVING files and it is, as you say, sporadic even from the same person, then it is almost guaranteed to be a problem on that person's side. Or, you are experiencing this only when RESUMING a download. If that's the case, it's a NAT issue in your router (search the forums for NAT or Resume and you should see more information).

Blocked by ZoneAlarm Security

I cannot get it guys. i m usin zonealarm for 7 years i think. From program control i have given full access and trust to mirc but i cannot get connected. i uninstaled mirc and re-install it but nothin new. I have adsl connection without a router. Just a modem. Microsoft's firewall is off. What do u suggest me guys..

thanks in advance. :|
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 10/06/07 06:50 AM
This is a ZoneAlarm Security problem, as you specified in bold, so installing and reinstalling mIRC is going to make little or no difference. You should contact the makers of ZoneAlarm.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 10/06/07 08:25 PM
I don't use ZoneAlarm, but I believe that there's a setting somewhere to block IRC. You may have mIRC "allowed", but not IRC. Look around for that.

Yes, it usually switches to them automatically after it fails the actual irc.lunarnet.org itself but I also tried them manually and it still fails to work.

EDIT: Throughout my previous attempts of today I got a new message

I just recently had comcast come to my house to service my connection, he said he had to replace the connection out at the pole and the box it connects to outside my house. Before all this i could log onto IRC no problem, but now it's like its not even finding an internet connection to attempt connecting to a server. Could any settings have changed that cause just irc to not work? I can play online games and surf web pages but no irc. Or can I just quick fix the problem and reinstall mirc?
Posted By: RoCk Re: Unable to Connect - 27/06/07 04:24 PM
It's just a coincidence that it happened just after getting the repairs done, but since you obviously have a network connection (online games and web surfing) chances are it's the IRC server to which you're trying to connect that's the problem. Try a different server on your IRC network, try a server on a different network before trying to change any settings on your machine.

Should I uninstall and reinstall...I feel like MIRC let me in the first time, but it hasn't worked since.

It may be worth trying however even after shutting down certain firewalls they remain active depending which ones you are using of course.
As for xp's firewall uhm pass never used it sorry
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 11/07/07 08:51 PM
To disable the Windows firewall:

1)
"Classic" menu in XP or pre-XP menus:
Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel

XP themed menus (probably the same in Vista):
Start Menu > Control Panel

2)
"Classic" View of Control Panel in XP (or pre-XPs):
Click on Windows Firewall

"Category" View in XP (probably the same in Vista):
Click on Security Center > Windows Firewall

Once there, just disable it.

I think MIRC let me in the first time but hasn't since. Is there a way to reset all of my initial settings AND uninstall/re-install for a clean start?

Thanks again,

Uninstall mIRC using the Add/Remove Programs section in Windows Control Panel.
Download the mIRC installation program from here
Install mIRC and if it asks if you want to keep or override anything, use the override option.

Posted By: SladeKraven Re: Unable to Connect - 24/09/07 01:27 PM
It might be that they blocked IRC completely and if that's the case I don't think we can help you evade. Most colleges usually block ports 6665-7000.
Posted By: Pengu Re: Unable to Connect - 24/09/07 02:13 PM
Well I managed to connect once ceating a new server using port 7000, but that doesnt seem to work anymore. Is there anyway around this?? Perhaps dling another IRC client?
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 24/09/07 08:51 PM
If using another port doesn't work in mIRC, it will not work in any other client. If you try using a port and it tries to connect and fails, then it just means that they blocked it. Perhaps they only blocked 6667 to begin with and after you used it on 7000, they noticed and chose to block everything.

Remember that if you try to get around a block that they purposely put in place, you risk disciplinary action from the college/university that may include being banned from their network and/or being expelled. Be careful what you do that you know they don't want you doing.

Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 30/09/07 06:01 AM
First thing to try, is connecting with just mIRC.

Remove Thug and any other scripts that you have, then try connecting. This should enable you/us to determine if it's mIRC or THUG that's causing problems.

If you can connect properly with THUG removed, then you need to contact them.

Hi, I just tried irc.icq.com and managed to connect just fine, however it is possible there was a problem in the dns pool OR you are not able to fully resolve the hostname, with that in mind try /server 64.12.165.56

Good luck

Bans often last 24-48 hours. Unless you are able to contact the network for help getting it removed sooner, you'll have to wait. You can try going to the network's website and look for contact information there. They may be willing to remove it sooner if you talk to them.

In the future, you should be careful about doing what people on IRC tell you. That's a good way to get not just banned, but viruses and trojans.

Hey everyone i'm new to mirc. I've heard of it before and used it a few times a while back. But i'm having connection issues. This is the message I get "Status:not connected(Abjects,irc.abjects.net). In mirc options I left everything as is. In local info the local hosts is checked, "lookup method is checked to server. But the Local host and Ip address is blank in the local info options. Could this be the problem?
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 16/10/07 08:13 PM
No need to quote anything unless it is required for what you are posting.

The local info boxes will fill automatically when you connect, so if you're not connected, then it's not a problem if they are blank.

Did you try to connect? If so, how did you try? Did you press the connect button? Or did you go through the connection dialog? Please paste the entire connection message you are getting when trying to connect. Just typing what it says without including an exact paste of the entire attempt to connect doesn't help much.

If you cannot access the site either (and you did enter a valid URL into your browser), then it's possible your ISP is blocking connection to the entire irchighway domain (both HTTP and IRC), though that's rather strange.

Are you able to connect to other networks and their sites?
Posted By: Sulphuric Re: Unable to Connect - 27/10/07 12:22 AM
Yes, I can connect to other servers and sites, rizon for example.
My ISP tells that they haven't blocked anything (But I don't know if I can believe them). Maybe irchighway blocked me somehow? Can this be because of virus? My registered nickname on irchighway server is Orchill.
Thank you very much!

I really need help cos irchighway is a place for all my favorite channels... :(((
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 27/10/07 01:32 AM
Connection timed out wouldn't occur if they blocked you on IRC. And there really isn't any reason they'd block you on the website.

You might try looking into any antivirus/antispyware software you have. Maybe you somehow have the network blocked. Check your router as well. I don't really know how you'd manage to block it like that, though.

* Connecting to irc.darkmyst.org (6667)
-
-intermedia.sg.as.darkmyst.org- *** Looking up your hostname...
-
-intermedia.sg.as.darkmyst.org- *** Found your hostname.
-
Closing Link: adsl-71-129-41-26.dsl.irvnca.pacbell.net (Detected probable drone/spambot (Clones). If this is in error, please email support@darkmyst.org and include this message.)
-
* Disconnected

When I first saw this error, I waited and I tried again later and it worked for quite a while but then it died again and this error reappeared. I thought it would work if I waited again but it doesn't seem like it's gonna happen.
Posted By: Trashlord_ Re: Unable to Connect - 02/11/07 11:08 PM
The akill reason includes an email, send them one, explain that you're not a drone or a spambot, and they will probably fix it.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 03/11/07 01:17 AM
Try changing your identd username (Alt-O > Connect > Indentd). Note that if you have the checkbox enabled for using the e-mail address for the identd, you should change that or uncheck the box instead.

Some servers automatically ban you if your identd is something "weird" that appears to be a spambot ident.

ok i dont know what the problem is..
i dont know why but no matter what server i try i cant connect
its the newest mIRC and its registered so i dont know why it wont work =\
the OS is vista and the firewall is normally turned off cause i have to use my Nintendo wifi usb connector...
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 23/11/07 11:03 AM
DNS Pool isn't an error. It just means there is more than one server using that IP/DNS.

As far as not being able to connect, make sure Antivirus and Firewall software aren't blocking mIRC *OR* IRC and that your router isn't blocking IRC. Beyond that, check with your ISP to see if they block IRC ports.

You mentioned trying different servers, but try different networks as well. See if it's related to the network or not.

Unable to connect to server (Connection refused)

This is what I get when trying to connect to several servers which other ppl are logged onto while I try.

Mirc version is 6.31

Windows XP Pro

And I got no firewall or antivirus blocking(nor running) while trying.

Edit: I could connect to webmaster.ca.us.webchat.org (6665) but thats the only one, rest gives me that error

Dear support team, I can't log on at all. This is what I get: *Connecting to Karaoke (6667)* Unable to resolve server, then it tries 10 times to connect and each time getting the same message. I have been logging on for two months now the same way and I have never had this problem. Thanks for any help you can give me. Dave
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 11/02/08 11:09 AM
If *Connecting to Karaoke (6667)* Unable to resolve server is exactly what you see, then your problem is that you aren't trying to connect to a valid server address. "Karaoke" isn't valid. It should be something similar to "irc.Karaoke.org" or "servername.Kakaoke.org" or whatever. "Karaoke" may not even be part of the server address.

You're going to have to figure out what the server/network is and use that to connect.

This is the message I get when I try to login to IRC. The problem started when someone name Boox4 told me to join the channel #b0t for items for my game outwar. I joined and then I immediatly got disconnected and now I get this error. I scanned my computer twice with McAfee and still I get this error. Any help please?

This is exactly the same situation I'm in right now. Went to that channel from an outwar related channel, and now I can't log in to Quakenet. Any idea on how to remedy this?
Posted By: argv0 Re: Unable to Connect - 27/03/08 02:56 AM
You have to contact an admin from quakenet... that's the only real solution to your problem.

Please don't double post.

Regretfully the Connection refused error is one that you can't do anything about except keep trying. In my experience, it means that the server that you're trying to connect to is full, and in a case like undernet, you keep being routed to a different server, and all of the connections for that server, at that time, are occupied.

You only seem to be trying *one* server (at least in that example). are you sure you cannot connect to *any* server?
Posted By: Rosanga Re: Unable to Connect - 12/05/08 04:14 PM
i am sure of that, i have tried many servers that are on the server list that comes with the mirc software nothing gets connected, the problems are always same
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 13/05/08 12:40 AM
Part of your problem is the fact that you are using a dial-up connection, so your actual connection to the server is too slow for that server and/or port. Regretfully there's nothing that I know of to help with this, aside from suggesting that you get a faster internet connection.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 13/05/08 02:31 AM
Uh... that's not likely to be an issue. You can connect to IRC on dialup easily unless you have a REALLY slow dialup (300baud anyone?).

Routers, firewalls, other internet software... it can all play a part. As you can see from this thread, there are a LOT of causes for connection issues and a LOT of ways to make it work. You really have to troubleshoot it yourself to narrow it down. Otherwise it is just random guess work for anyone to help you and that's not a good way to find a solution.
Posted By: OShitMan Re: Unable to Connect - 18/09/08 02:31 PM
Hello,

although I know no one has posted in this thread for several months, I would still like some help on my problem.
I shall try to give you the information you need in order to help me. The error that I get is

(16:17:36) * Connecting to irc.infiltrate.nl (6667)
(16:17:58) * Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)

Obviously, I want to connect to irc.infiltrate.nl.
I have tried other servers (quakenet and such) and I get the same message. I have tried connecting to the ip-adresses as well, and that did not work. I don't have a firewall and my virusscan isn't on. I have talked to other people that are usually on the server I go to, and they tell me they don't have any problems connecting. When I try run>cmd and then ping infiltrate.nl, I get 'Time-out at *something*' (it's in Dutch, I don't know the English term for it). I also get this when pinging google.com. I can surf the internet and MSN works just fine, even downloading is not a problem. I have no idea how to get to my router's settings (Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC #) (don't know if that's relevant). The problem started yesterday. I had been taking my computer apart because it wasn't working anymore. Then, when it all worked again, so did mIRC. Then I noticed my sound wasn't working, so I took the soundcard out and put it back in (this while my computer was turned off). Then, something happened to the storage device on which I had mIRC installed. I restarted my computer and it worked fine again. Except mIRC. Now I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I'd rather tell you too much than too little.
I would like some help on this!

Hi guys, I just swaped from dsl to cablemodem, but now i cant connect.
When i connect, it doesnt take my ip, instead it uses the server's IP and i get my DNS resolved with server's IP like this:

Local host: 66-252-7-150.Eden.The-IRC.Com (66.252.7.150) IRC Network Gatito_Felix!~slash@66.252.7.150
IRC Network Gatito_Felix!~slash@208.99.193.130
Local host: unknown (72.51.18.254)
Gatito_Felix is ~slash@72.51.18.254
PhazeNet IRC Network Gatito_Felix!~slash@72.20.48.56

and so....it changes IP as i change servers, but most times it stucks at start when the MOTD comes and stays there
I already tried changing connecting options in mirc like 'on connect, always get' local host - Ip address
but still nothing
I have a LAN IP address 192.168.0.10 and WAN IP Address: 200.119.* which takes me to another external IP 200.119.*
Maybe there is some modem configuration that could be make
i hope someone can help me
thank you"""!!

I'm not sure what the problem is... you claim you can't connect but your problem description shows that you in fact can connect to multiple severs (and you're even able to whois yourself). Are you having trouble connecting or are you just confused about your ip address?

Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 31/12/08 03:31 AM
Yes, that can be part or all of the problem, however, that error has been known to show with all kinds of connections.
Dial-up, cable, DSL, shared (ie: using a router), and not.

Simply put, the server didn't respond to the IRC client in a timely manner, so the client returned a Timeout error.

I've even seen this happen on non-irc items, such as web browsers just going to view a page on the web.

if this only happens in the library it means that they're blocking IRC, which is not that far fetched a thought. In that case, you will not be able to use mIRC there (or any other IRC client).
Posted By: colemancb Re: Unable to Connect - 14/04/09 01:58 PM
Hi. Can't connect to any server, on any port. Tried two different clean versions of mIRC.
Windows XP Professional.
Verizon 3m/768k DSL with ports 6660-6669 forwarded on the router.
Just says 'Unable to connect to server (connection timed out)'.
Also tried increasing the time-out limit to 240 seconds with no luck.
Not running any kind of firewall/anti-virus.
Posted By: CtrlAltDel Re: Unable to Connect - 14/04/09 02:14 PM
Windows XP has it's own firewall, as does the DSL modem. Try both.
Posted By: colemancb Re: Unable to Connect - 14/04/09 02:33 PM
As said, I am not running -any- firewall. XP firewall is disabled. I also tried disabling all security on my router and that did not help either.

What would happen if Mirc was bad I can't access copd-international throught IE firefox aol and Mirc thanks all Bruce
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 14/05/09 12:47 AM
If mIRC was bad, then there's no way of predicting what might happen. If you suspect that mIRC is the cause of your problems, perform an uninstall of mIRC using the Add/Remove Programs section in Control Panel (for Windows XP) or the equivalent for other Windows versions.
If you download mIRC from here then the installer and the version of mIRC that is installed are good.

This type of error usually means the internet connection is down.
Obviously, since you were able to post here, it's not your connection, therefore, it's the connection between the internet and the network server.

Nothing you can do except wait.
Posted By: Constantine Re: Unable to Connect - 30/06/09 05:31 AM
It is working for me right now, however if you are still having issues, try one of the servers directly CLICK HERE for a list
Posted By: Khaled Re: Unable to Connect - 30/06/09 06:46 AM
The "No route to Host" message may also indicate that your mIRC is being blocked by your anti-virus or firewall software. You may need to add mIRC to the your your anti-virus or firewall software's "allowed" applications to allow it to connect.

cannot connect toserver for 3 days now tried other servers but still no success. is mirc down for some reason.. this happened to me once before but in a couple days it was back up
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 06/08/09 12:52 AM
mIRC is the client/program that you use to connect to an IRC network. The only way that I can see mIRC being down, is if your computer is also down.

If you are trying different servers that all go to the same network, and that network is down, then you still won't be able to connect. If you are trying to connect to the Karaoke-Realm network, as referenced earlier in this topic, and discussed in another topic, it appears that they didn't renew their agreement with their hosting site, thus it has lapsed/expired.

If you are referring to another network, please specify which network you are trying to connect to.

Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 09/08/09 07:48 PM
A quick search for Karaoke-realm would've brought up a number of recent topics, which, after reading, would've told you that, yes, karaoke-realm is down.
It appears that they failed to renew their hosting access.

All of a sudden I'm getting this error, and cannot log on using any server.

AUTO [1] Infected with a virus or trojan, please clean your system. Cleaner @ http://www.moosoft.com (P12).

Do I really have a virus or trojan, or is this caused by some cookie or something? I certainly find it suspicious that I'm being directed to a site wanting me to purchase a "cleaner.

Thanks in advance for any help!
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 20/09/09 12:15 AM
This is usually triggered by someone with the same or a similar IP address (eg: same provider) being infected
Eg: If JJJ using IP xxx.xxx.yyy.zzz is infected and your IP address is aaa.bbb.yyy.zzz then you might be presumed to be infected.

While you are directed to a site that offers a purchasable version, there is a Download link directly underneath it (I just opened the site) where you can download a free version.

It would help to determine if this is literally coming from the server, or if someone is trying to spam/force you to purchase from that site, if you could provide an exact quote of the message, including the nick/name of the sender.

Even server notices contain this information.

I'm on mIRC V6.35 and keeping getting this error message:

* Connecting to irc.acidchat.net (6667)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)

I've tried changing ports and increasing the time before mIRC retries to 180 seconds but they've not helped. I've also tried connecting to different servers with the same problem, and using the IP address of the servers I want to connect to. It must be to do with being on my uni network connection as I had this problem before, it was fixed when I went back home, and now it's returned.

What aren't I doing to fix this!?
Posted By: argv0 Re: Unable to Connect - 12/01/10 06:50 PM
If it's your university network it means they're blocking that host and there's not much you can do. Note that unless you're on a 14.4 dialup modem, a TCP connection should be made within 5 seconds (to the first server response, not full connection) or it won't be made at all. Upping the timeout to 180 seconds and attempting to wait it out will just be a waste of your time.

The only real way to deal with your uni network is to connect via a proxy or bnc, but those will generally cost you, and we do not support or condone bypassing network firewalls to gain irc connectivity. I would suggest talking to a network admin at your university and ask them why your connection is being refused; they will be able to definitively answer whether the network prohibits connections to that host (and why, if you're lucky).
Posted By: doradoll Re: Unable to Connect - 12/01/10 07:28 PM
Is it likely they'd be blocking all hosts, or all irc connections?
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 13/01/10 06:24 AM
They may be blocking certain ports, especially during class times, but those ports might be opened when classes are not in session.

The best place to get the correct information is the IT department.

If you don't know where that is, go to the main office and ask. As a student at the university you have the right to inquire of any department that affects your ability to live on campus at the university.
Posted By: doradoll Re: Unable to Connect - 14/01/10 11:11 AM
Yeah okay, I was just asking because it seems odd they'd block irc when they've left ports for bittorrent programs open & dont seem to monitor any other shit. But I'll ask and find out.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 14/01/10 01:52 PM
Oh, I can just about guarantee they monitor it all even if they don't do anything about it. When I was at college, they knew that I was in the top 20 for bandwidth usage on the campus, but never complained about it. smile

IRC tends to get blocked more often than protocols that you might expect to be blocked at colleges and universities. I'm not entirely sure why that is other than perhaps they just don't want the "chat" options available (they tend to block IM clients a lot as well) but don't necessarily care about downloading. It's not unusual. Be happy that you still have access to those other protocols.

I think this is a problem with the servers I am trying to connect to but thought I would ask here just to make sure.

mIRC version 6.35
I am trying to connect to the fdfnet servers and I get the following 2 errors:
bethere.fdfnet.net returns (Connection timed out)
ibusy.fdfnet.net returns (Connection refused)
If I try another network I connect right away. Is there something else I can try?
I can ping these servers with no problem but traceroute seems to have been removed from vista so I can not get a traceroute to check if that is the problem.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 30/03/10 12:20 AM
You're using tracert, right? It should work fine in Vista. In any case, if you can't connect to those 2 servers, but can connect to others, then it's an issue on the network. You have a couple of options. Try using a different port when connecting to them (instead of 6667, use 6669 for example). Or, you can try connecting to the servers using their IP addresses. There are a variety of lookup sites that can give you the IP of those servers (try google). Or, you can try a different server on that network.

Posted By: argv0 Re: Unable to Connect - 31/03/10 08:17 AM
The server might've been down temporarily or you might have a firewall active that is blocking outgoing connections. Windows firewall might do this, but if you have any anti-virus software it could be doing this too. Also make sure you don't have mIRC's proxy settings active (Alt+O -> Connect -> Firewall "Connection" should be set to None)

The server works for me now, you should try it again.

It resolved fine here. You could just use the ip until it clears up... which it will... sooner or later.

miracle.us.pchnet.org = 67.23.19.154

If the IP doesn't work either, then you have IRC blocked through a firewall or router. Or your ISP is blocking it (such as if you're at college).

Hello,

I've been trying for a while to connect to a server from my laptop. I'm getting the following error message:

* Connect retry #3 ircnet.eversible.com (6667)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Network is down)

This might sound like an easy one but I know the network is actually not down. I can reach it without a problem on our main computer in the house at this moment.

I'm on windows XP, I tried making sure mIRC and the port is allowed in windows firewall, I tried disabling it all together, this didn't help me. I'm not using any other firewalls.

I'm using mIRC version 6.35.

We have a Phillips router. I'm not sure why it works on the other pc and not on the laptop, anyone have any ideas?

I paid the $20 no luck even successfully having that count. I took off all firewalls - no help- I called ATT and they said they did not block mIRC. The only thing I found is that the Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0 which one post said was not good but did not say what to do about it. ARG I just keep getting the same message

Have you tried other servers, networks, and ports?
Posted By: jane_au Re: Unable to Connect - 28/07/10 04:43 PM
I have tried many servers listed in the mIRC directory and some I found in my travels through this support system but as for networks and ports I do not know how to do that...actually I did try some address to websites that I thought were to be placed in the mIRC site and found chatcircuit.com and tried some of them and got a different message "unable to resolve server" so at least I am getting a different message but still not able to connect so maybe you can tell me how to connect to different ports, maybe that will do the trick.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 28/07/10 06:43 PM
Here's an example:

/server irc.undernet.org 6665
/server irc.undernet.org 6667

As a note, some servers/networks support ports that others do not support. If you check the website for a network, it may tell you the supported ports. Otherwise, you can just test with common IRC server ports.

You might also try connecting using the server's IP address instead of the name. For example:

/server 111.111.111.111 6667

Note that the IP listed there isn't a valid IRC server IP address (as far as I know). You'd need to replace it with a valid one. You can find server IP addresses on the network's website or by doing a lookup by the server name or a variety of other ways.

Regarding your comment about websites... you cannot connect to a website within mIRC. That's why you receive unable to resolve server.
Posted By: jane_au Re: Unable to Connect - 28/07/10 07:14 PM
Since you are communicating with a "newbie" I need to know where to type all of these things. Where do I get the numbers
111.111.111.1 and where exactly do I type them
In the address box in internet explorer or somewhere on the mIRC site?

I have found websited that have servers and when I click on them they bring up mIRC and ask if I want to try to connect with that server and when I say yes it tries but is unsuccessful so there is still something wrong on my end.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 28/07/10 10:15 PM
You type commands like that into mIRC (in the edit bar on the bottom). I gave some examples of where to find IP addresses. You should start with the network's website. For example, Undernet's website is www.undernet.org (first link in Google if you search for Undernet). On the main page, you'll see a link to their servers ( http://www.undernet.org/servers.php ) and that will show you the server names and the ports that are valid for them.

So, for example, you can type one of these:
/server Vancouver.BC.CA.Undernet.org 6667
/server bucharest.ro.eu.undernet.org 6665

Note that with the second one, I chose a port within the range that was given.

If you want the IP address, Undernet doesn't appear to list those, so you can do a lookup online. Here's one IP Address Lookup site: http://www.urgentclick.com/ip_address_lookup.php

So, if I type in bucharest.ro.eu.undernet.org that I found on Undernet's site, I get an IP address of 82.76.255.62. I can then use:

/server 82.76.255.62 6665

Since we have exhasted all efforts to connect to mIRC thinking it is a server problem, maybe it is not. Is there a way to find out if the problem is my computer. I have turned off the firewalls and that has not helped. Maybe there is some box that is checked in some properties window that is blocking my connection with mIRC. I remember "ping"ing when I have had tech support before with connection problems with Internet Providers can we try something like that and how do I do that?
Posted By: Khaled Re: Unable to Connect - 30/07/10 04:26 PM
If you are using anti-virus software, it is quite possible that it is the culprit. Anti-virus software can block applications that it thinks are "suspicious" even if the applications are actually legitimate. Can you tell us which anti-virus software you are using?

Also, if you type this into Status Window editbox in mIRC:

/server irc.quakenet.org 6667

And then press the enter key, mIRC should connect to the QuakeNet IRC network. If it does not connect, can you tell us what error message you are seeing in the Status Window?

"Unable to connect (network is unreachable)"
I know that the IP i am using is good because I can still connect when I try it from my old computer. All firewall and network settings are the same between the two machines. I am using mIRC vers 6.35 and running windows XP. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated
Posted By: RusselB Re: Unable to Connect - 04/12/10 03:51 AM
Are you trying to connect using the identical settings on both computers at the same time, or with one while the other one is already connected?

If so, then it sounds like you need to get your router reconfigured. If you are trying to do it without a router, then I don't know if that's even possible with a single internet connection.

If you have a router, then use PortForward for assistance in properly configuring your router.
Posted By: david01228 Re: Unable to Connect - 04/12/10 04:54 AM
It is not my router since I can connect multiple machines right now. However when i try to replace one of the old machines with my new one (with the settings identical to the one I am replacing) it gives me the unable to connect error.

Hi there,
trying to solve my problems now for about half a week, searched lot of forums, pages, checked a lot, without effort:

Win7 64 ultimate
mIRC 7.22 (tested 7.19 too)
openSSL 0.9.8.18 or 1.0.0.5
ESET NOD32 AV uptodate on or off
Firewall has rulez for mirc TCP/UDP all opened
AVM Fritz!box 7390 firewall has rule mirc port 6660-7000 opened

i can connect by standardconnection to any server without problems, but if i try to use SSL its unable to connect.
Checked some different server with different ports.
Any advice?

UPDATE:
finally found the problem, that hooked me up:
On Win7 the system mainly try to look into the $user/AppData/-directories.
mIRC seems to look also to this, but most apps like openSSL and scripts go to $drive/Program Files/mIRC-directory.
And mIRC don't seems to look after that directory, because it runs (mirrored) out of $user/AppData/-directories.

Solution for now:
copied all from $drive/Program Files/mIRC-directory
to $user/AppData/-directory
all fine.

Hello, I often use the channel "pracc.ru", but now when trying to connect to this channel, I get a message that my ip-adress banned for advertising.
I understand that because someone banned from the whole network of my provider. How can I restore access to the channel?
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 27/10/11 01:28 AM
We cannot help you with bans other than to tell you to contact the network or channel where you were banned. Only they can remove your ban for you. Networks usually have a website with contact information that you can use to ask for help. Channels may or may not have contact information available and you may need to try and contact a user from that channel or ask someone else to go in there to ask for help for you.

Because the network is unreachable from your location. It might be a routing issue with your ISP (or ISP's DNS) or the server might just have been down at the time. I am able to connect to it now, though.

How do I check if it's a routing issue with the ISP/ISP DNS?
Posted By: maroon Re: Unable to Connect - 14/01/12 07:59 PM
if you go to status window and do

/dns host_mask_of_server

and it gives you the ip number of the server, then it's not a problem of your isp's DNS not being able to find it. (though there's a remote chance it's returning an OLD status of the ip number)

if that /dns is unable to find it, then either you've used the wrong server-name, or it's dead-or-down, or maybe the ISP's DNS server doesn't have it.

if you have a friend at another isp who is able to get a reply to the /dns command while you can't, then there's a good chance it's a problem with your ISP's dns.

If your friend gets a reply that the /dns resolves to a number, you might be able to use "/server that-number" to connect.

Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 23/02/12 06:26 PM
It depends on the network. Many networks are set up where you can use something like us.undernet.org instead of irc.undernet.org to connect to a US/Canada server or eu.undernet.org to connect to a European server. Or, you can specify the server you want... something like: some.server.us or some.server.se . The server names are usually available on the network's website, or if they are servers in the default server list in mIRC, you can find out the information from there.

Hey, I've been reading the comments and i still don't know what's wrong. It keeps saying
Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)

I set it to connect in 60 sec and then I tried 120 sec and nothing. I checked my firewall since I have v.7 and windows xp and it says that mIRC is on the list of allowed programs, but I still can't connect to a server, any server...
Any help for this would be greatly appreciated

Hello, this has been a long read for 22 pages and some interesting details. However I am a bit stumped. My issue is:

I seem to connect (sometimes past the MOTD) but never actually get to do anything before a 5 minute waiting period where I usually get a [10053] Software caused connection abort (screen copy to follow at end of message)

I have tried a number of things (as I am not very well versed with MIRC or some of the technical talk that is contained within this thread)including trying different networks such as Undernet, Dalnet, a few networks listed within this thread.

I have tried on various port such as 6667, 6666, 6669, 6665.

I tried the various combinations in MIRC >> Connect > Local. {One thing of note is that when I put 'IP Address' instead of 'Host name' it puts in my computer side IP (192.168....).

I also tried the suggestion of contacting a server by it's IP (/server 66.225.225.225 (which came from /dns irc.servercentral.net (chicago efnet - thank you to whom had posted that command!))) which results in the same message and disconnects.

This system runs on a WinXp Home based system running MIRC v7.22.
We are using Cable to communicate so I guess we are behind a router as well as realtime a/v-firewall running. (Bright house networks(basically RoadRunner and Norton 360 respectively). - I temporarily turned off the 'smart firewall' as well as 'real-time protection' and even took out the entry (temporarily as it puts it back in with each run of MIRC) from the 'program rules' section of the firewall.

We had moved a few weeks ago and this is the first we are trying to use mirc. There were issues where we would have problems connecting before but trying different servers on a given network such as undernet would usually get us connected within a few tris. Now I am wondering if that was the start of the current issues or what? Now we can't seem to connect to any network without getting the software message.

Below is the copy from the mirc window if it is of any help. Should any further information be helpful that i have left out please let me know. After hours of tinkering I am spent and could use some direction to figure this out. I will provide any information I am able to. Thank you very much!

I was wondering one thing though. In case something in MIRC got changed and is preventing connecting with networks is there a way to 'reset' mirc 7.22? I assume uninstalling would do the trick? If it does is there any other way?

Thank you much.
Posted By: Riamus2 Re: Unable to Connect - 08/05/12 11:43 AM
If you want to try a clean install, you can remove mirc.ini (you can move it somewhere like your desktop so that you can replace it later if you don't want to lose your settings).

As far as your situation, it looks like you connect just fine. Although this happens on multiple networks, one thing I notice here that could potentially be the same on those other networks is the VERSION check by the network. Many networks run that or similar things to look for bots. You might want to check and make sure that you're not blocking CTCP or aren't ignoring the bots that are running those commands. The networks could choose to kick you if you don't reply.

You could also try installing a different version of mIRC and see if that helps. For example, 6.35.

It may also help if you type /debug @debug before connecting and then paste the results of the @debug window here. It *might* provide some additional detail.
Posted By: gatherer Re: Unable to Connect - 11/05/12 06:36 AM
I had no idea of that command, thank you!

As a quick side note I tried the command /list but no window pops up until the server disconnects and then pops up a blank list window.

Also I noticed for ports 6660 through 6669 after it begins the welcome message right after the 'no identd response' line that their is constant activity for packets sent and received. Looks like usually around 2k packets rec'd until it disconnects.

I don't usually use Efnet but it seems to be quicker at disconnecting whereas networks such as Undernet seem to take a couple more minutes to disconnect and tell you your not getting anywhere smile
Posted By: gatherer Re: Unable to Connect - 12/05/12 11:20 PM
Well getting a 2nd computer and putting MIRC onto it (as well as WinXp Home) and having the exact same issue I was quite convinced that the issue had nothing to do with the MIRC program. Feeling quite confident and smarter about tracking the issue down to the firewall (which I had disabled) or an issue with the ISP or even the OS I played with the program just little bit more and on the 2nd computer it started working. It had begun going into chat rooms by messing constantly with the before mentioned MIRC>>Options>>Connect>Local and playing with the options there. The deciding factor seemed to be putting in the host name of my ISP and it's IP# and connecting to Efnet.

What confused me even further was the fact that I tried, now confident that it would work with other networks and it didn't until I played around with the same options and again entered the host name and IP # of my ISP and again it started going into chat rooms.

I don't know if the issues are completely gone but after yesterday and being able to connect with a few servers seems to not be having issue.

Thank you to those whom have started these threads with information and guidance and to Riamus2 for responding to my issue. It helps to not feel alone and going in complete circles.

I assume I will still have software disconnect issue cause something somewhere is not 100% right because I connect with a network/server that said it required IdentD and I was able to chat/whois/list but had a tilde before my name but am happier and relieved to have it connecting. I just don't completely understand why smile

Take care all and good luck.

Posted By: NL_Robb Re: Unable to Connect - 10/06/13 09:07 PM
Does anyone have a clue what is the problem with Undernet lately? Now for days again am unable to connect to any of the servers.

1. Firewall/Virusscanner checked.
2. Other networks like DALnet EFnet etc all connect.
3. Undernetservers all give "Unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)".
4. The random US gives "Connect retry #2 us.undernet.org (6669) (dns pool)".
5. Already tried connecting directly to the server without DNS with the /server command on several ports

Strange thing is that if i try to connect to Undernet with www.mibbit.com i also cannot connect.

Your virus protection or firewall blocking the connection, try disable them and see if that helps..

Hello, I had to run my mIRC client after longer period and suddenly see it's not able to connect to most of my configured servers it stays in loop with these messages
Unable to connect to server (Host disconnected)
trying all possible servers none works. I would appreciate a resolution for this problem
(mIRC 7.32 running on Win8.1E 64bit, static cable connection)
I reproduce the same problem with same mIRC version on same netnode running in Win7 64bit, however I can connect to same server using mobile client from Smartphone connected to same network, from this it looks like mIRC self problem rather than a networking issue). Thanks in advance for all valid suggestions.

I have windows 7 and my favorite chatroom just had to switch servers because our old one is about to close down. The new info is supposed to be irc.zerogummi.com, port 6667 but when I added it and tried to connect it says unable to connect to server (connection timed out) What should I do? I do have a firewall but it never bothered the old server or this one. I was on this one just the other night I cant get back on it now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Undernet's "round robin" DNS server (irc.undernet.org) goes down from time to time. You can usually find a list of actual servers by google for '<Network Name> Servers'.

http://www.google.com/search?q=undernet+servers

If their entire DNS server is down, you won't be able to resolve any of their server addresses. In that case, try connecting here:

irc://154.35.175.201:6667/

IP 154.35.175.201
PORT 6667

For what it's worth, Undernet is dying. Tell them that you're going to say goodbye now.

About the server list pretty much all is out...

p.s.-just noticed that the host disconnects some over last hour or so(* [10101] Host disconnected)but restarts next(bit annoying but better then no under)hope this is just temporary.
Posted By: Raccoon Re: Unable to Connect - 17/04/15 12:40 AM
It's not temporary. Hopefully Undernet will put their name to rest by 2016 so they stop giving the rest of IRC a bad name.

To nobody in particular:
Funny, I sit on Undernet and Abjects both with absolutely no connection problems. Could it be that they are blocking isp's (or even regions/countries)?
Raccoon: I agree about giving the rest of IRC a bad name .. It would be a nice surprise if they finally gave up on ircu2 and adopted unreal, but that's asking a lot .. they'd have to give up "X"

I want say this, for me in first place it is weird that to see other ppl/users/... in undernet who are either using servers that do not work in my case or Chatzilla(which for me(apart the server you gave) is not working at all(undernet,dalnet,...)since i had the ird issue)...
But most of all i strange the visible fact that while i am online in undernet i see the others who barely fall out offline like i do(in rather some frequency( [10101] Host disconnected))...

On meanwhile the other/original servers of my irc(that in an attempt to solve it,was updated lil after i returned home in march) keep not working...("unable to connect")...
I wonder if there are any other servers that can be used?

p.s.:
Dalnet(in my irc) is stable so far/till now...

Can anyone tell me if this is similar issue to what i had in undernet months ago or like just a temporary thing or rather other issue type(ex: anti-virus messing up?)?

the problem persists still,no server i got on dalnet seem to work

The situation i described above for the time being is solved

I sent an email (actually, two) for help with a connection problem.

I've had no response for a few days now. Is there another address that I should use? I sent all the info to: banned@irchighway.net

My problem is that I'm suspected as being a spambot and I need to be reset (I think).

Thanks.

Same message here once I installed the most recent version. Funny thing is, I can't connect at home anymore, but I had no problem using another DSL line elsewhere. It says unable to connect to server" (operation timed out), and continues to try to connect and fails. Identid is enabled. How to troubleshoot this? I may try an older version of MiRC. I've had no problem with irchighway.net previously. I can't connect to any other server either - same message.

Also having the same problem but I'm on a satalite internet hughes net modem and Win10. Tried different port, net, and servers.
