Hi, I'm sharing a dialup connetion with someone who likes to download music through mIRC. This can be frustrating at times.

What I'd like to do is limit the speed to 2 maybe 3 KB/sec so that I still have a little bandwidth leftover for other things!

I understand the command "/dcc maxcps" is the one to look at, but I don't really know how to convert CPS to kilobytes. does 1 cps = 1B/sec ? or do I have to multiply it by the value of "/dcc packetsize"?

Also, is "Options->DCC->Options->Max. DCC Sends" talking about the number of file transfers recieved at a time? I am a little confused as to when it is talking about send and when recieve.

Sorry I can't try these for myself because I'm telling the other person what to do!

Thanks for any help =)

Here is an easy fix, tell your friend to stop downloading illegal music.

The commands you refer to are for sending with fserv. You cant control "speed" of gets.

it can be a lot more than frustrating, especially if you end up with trojans, or suffer as a result of his activity: http://news.com.com/2009-1025_3-1021283.html?tag=fd_lede2_hed

hrm, are you saying mIRC has no function to limit download speeds?

You are sent files at the speed that the sender is able to send. It's a bandwidth issue.

ok thanks

Depending on your network setup (the method you're using to share the internet connection), you should be able to tighten the belt on his connection from your own machine. Though, I couldn't tell you HOW to do this.

If you want to install software on his computer, look into the program NetLimiter which will limit the amount of bandwidth a program is entitled to use. The only option it's lacking is limiting the net bandwidth the machine is allowed to use.

The program doesn't appear to have any password lockout, so you'll just have to insist that he doesn't monkey with the limit, else lose his access.

ah yes I heard of netlimiter before, thanks for reminding me =)

Hmm. Maybe if I run the Internet Connection Sharing related services in their own process I could limit it with this app on server side.

Ultimately I'd have to set up software based traffic shapping on linux, which I plan to merge my connection sharing stuff to soon.

Anyway getting off topic, should there be a feature request to throttle a DCC, or is it technically infeasible?
I think a lot of people would want this, and many other programs supporting file transfer (eg ICQ) support this.
