as one more hint, maybe an unrelated/separate problem, that a few other users confirmed to me:
switching to mirc from another application can/often yields a long(few seconds) wait before mirc becomes responsive, once in, thins are much better.
And for users alt/win+tab'ing a lot things can get excruciatingly slow...
