You cannot be serious! Mirc 7.0 only works on windows 7?! I have windows 98 and it fails! Please fix so i can enjoy it just like the rest of us.

It works on more than Windows 7, but 98 is very outdated. You cannot expect mIRC to always maintain compatibility with something over 10 years old.

It likely works on 2000 and newer. The "failure" is likely a version check that prevents it from running because of features and changes that require a newer version of Windows to work properly. If anyone absolutely cannot upgrade their Windows from 98, they still can use 6.35.



It is a major rewrite from 6.35. Just because that version works on 98 doesn't mean this one will.

My windows 98 has all the windows xp goods installed so im pretty sure it should have all the required files, this version check is lame tho :<, maybe khalid can search for the files instead of the version :|.

Sorry, to clarify: mIRC no longer works under 95/98, but it does work on other versions than Win7. As said, 98 is too old to support anymore. There are new features in Windows (like Unicode, IPv6, the very features this beta targets) that make it difficult to maintain backwards compatibility and slow the progress of mIRC.

You can always continue to use 6.35. Again, if you're on a pre-XP version of Windows, you won't benefit from many features in the 7.0 beta anyway.

Installing "extras" to make 98 have some of the things from XP does not change the OS to XP. More than just a few *files* were changed between 98 and XP, so installing a few files won't give you the real compatibility that XP would offer. Sorry, but you have to either upgrade Windows or else use 6.35 from now on.

And I'm sure you could benefit from the new things in Windows as well. Maintaining compatibility with something over 10 years old prevents software from moving forward very easily. If you want the new mIRC, then get a new OS.

Probably none.

The new version of mIRC will only run under Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7.

It is no longer possible to run the new version of mIRC under older versions of Windows, such as Windows 95/98, since they cannot run Unicode applications natively, and any Unicode support that they do have is very limited. It was only with Windows 2000 and onwards that Unicode became a viable and practical option for applications.

At some point, I have to decide when to drop support for an older version of Windows. I usually maintain support for as long as I can - for example, Windows 3.1 was supported for many years, long after most developers dropped support for it, and even though very few people used it.

In the same way, I held back improvements in mIRC to support Windows 95/98, even though very few people were using those versions of Windows. At this point, Windows 95/98 register barely, if at all, in any global usage statistics. So it does seem a reasonable point to drop support for them and to allow mIRC development to move forward.
