i think the ability to use the CD player in mIRC would be useful, allowing a new form of sound to be added into the IRC experience for the user.
Also ability to edit the tags for the CD, Artist, and Track titles.
So a user could run the cd part of mirc, it'd set $cdtitle $tracktitle $artist to what it needs to be, so a scripter could make it so it'd do this
<nickname> playing CD: Fat Of The Land ARTIST: Prodigy SONG: Diesel Power
or something similar..

good idea, and prodigy rule!

Heh thankz... and yes prodigy do rule..
and tell me this much, why settle for only mp3, waves and midi's when using media on mirc (while chatting of course)

A CD player "built in" to mIRC would be nice.. prolly not necesary.. coz really.. u can make mirc do almost anything with the features it has. as long as you know how to script it.

it is supposed to be, but i wouldnt class it as a 'chat program'.
it has sockets, music, file handling, COM, none of which are used for chatting.
sure, it connects to IRC, but most of the commands are nothing to do with 'chatting', i would call it a decent all round program smile

Well, many here will throw up "why would you need that? mIRC is for chatting." when something is suggested that wouldn't be useful to them.
Posted By: pheonix Re: mIRC CD player - 21/09/03 03:22 PM
yeah, i noticed that when people used to ask about how to serve/get movies/music/etc, people used to say "mirc is for chatting", but when someone mentions stuff like on *:SPLAY nobody says that sort of thing.
Posted By: anacrosis Re: mIRC CD player - 22/09/03 08:57 AM
yes well mirc is 'mainly' used for chatting, as that is what it mainly does, but honestly, its more than just that, its a way to chat and have fun and other stuff.. mm.

crazy

stll splay and other things mirc can do, useful, not needed to chat, but makes the experience a whole lot better..

Why just a CD-player ? I mean: it would be nice to play CD's into channel, but I think more people play mp3's and such.

The trouble with music CD's is that they do not contain file names, artist names etc. unless you added it yourself. They would show as Track 01, Track 02 etc.

Fact is that more and more people listen to music while chatting, and it's commonly known that people share music files through DCC. But sadly it's hard to find a multi-server script, and some readily available player scripts are backdoored (like the one in MircPlus for instance). So why not meet the ever growing demands and have a player in mIRC ?

I do think having a player in mIRC would be good. Of course I'm not comparing, but even *cough*Pirch*spit* had one and *gag*MS Chat*puke* also had an option to browse through files to play music in channel, eventhough those were a bit rudimentary.

I myself feel that we shouldn't nag about whether it's a good idea or not: making a list of features this player should have, would be a better idea. See: no one knows mIRC coding better then Khaled so there would be a new challenge for him.

Finally I would like to end this posting with a message to Khaled, just in case he gets to read this:

Show 'em how it's done ! grin

mIRC does have an internal player and the command is /splay. While it doesn't support CDA, it supports MP3 and WAV (don't know about other formats).

Unless you're talking about a player that also advertises into the channel what you are listening to, in which case that won't appear in vanilla mIRC. If you want that, you're gonna have to script it.

actually no mirc does not have an internal player , what it does have is commands that then pass the sound handling functions onto the defualt windows media player, whichever that may be that u have set as defualt. therefor the support to add enhancement addons which include this stuff is already there. there is a dll out there that does infact do exactly as the original poster is suggesting, Altho i can appreciate there wanting a mirc dialog sound player, id have to assume with all this crap from groups like the riaa this will be a feature not so easily added in the near future.

Hmm. But "/splay" doesn't (or at least DIDN'T when I used mIRC) open an instance of the default media player confused

try searching the forums for a post from khaled about this. he infact states sounds do work exactly as im claiming. either hes lying or i just cant read.

Alright. You don't need to get defensive about it smile

me defensive? nope not at all. but im only merely pointing out that your times of using mirc and claiming it did one thing was actually completely false. if u take my point of proving you wrong as defensive on my part well, i could say im sorry for that, but i wont. maybe you should infact research your facts a lil better before posting that others are incorrect huh?

This is how mIRC plays sounds.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/multimed/htm/_win32_mci.asp

And there is a dll for mIRC called mci.dll to be able to use this without having to use the /splay command in mIRC.

Download it here.

No, because I can remember. At the time my default player was WinAMP and using /splay to play a file did NOT bring up WinAMP onto the screen. So i do have my facts straight smile I know what I can and cannot see on my screen smile
Posted By: DekuHaze Re: mIRC CD player - 28/09/03 09:24 PM
I'm not doubting D3mon's answer, I'm just saying that it didn't open up WinAMP to play the file smile

Sorry, I wasn't saying either of you were wrong, I was just showing you how mIRC plays sounds. I don't think he means that mIRC passes it on to the default media playing application, ie WinAmp or Windows Media Player. If you were to use the mci.dll to play an mp3 and give the device mircsong as an alias, and use the notify command, it will trigger the ONMP3END event.

ty for helping to clarify how it works, im sure im wording how it works incorrectly i probably should have said it uses the windows media codecs as i do believe thats how it works and not actually the defualt media player. again ty for clairfying my incorrect explanation
