Would be useful show what the message will look like before you send it when using bold, underline and colours instead of just showing control characters.

...and adding italics would aslo be helpful.

...and an optional formatting toolbar might be useful too...

I think this will be necessary-- it's the only way I can think of to solve the very nasty vista control codes bug.
