I'm not sure if this'll benefit anyone else, but a flag like -k which keeps the channel window(s) open once you've /part'd.

/part [-k] <#channel[,#channel,#channel,...]> [part message]
Posted By: b1ink Re: /part -k - 07/04/07 10:26 PM
I thought about that long ago. and yes I would like to see it.
Posted By: RusselB Re: /part -k - 07/04/07 11:15 PM
Forgive me if I'm missing something, but I fail to see why you would want to keep the channel open after you've parted it. I mean, for most (if not all scripts) that reference text/actions in a channel, you have to be part of the channel in order to see these.
In my opinion, keeping a channel window open that you're not in, simply takes up extra resources and screen space that could be used for a channel that you are in.

I'm not saying that there can't be a situation where you would want a channel open and not be active in that channel, but at the moment (and I've been thinking about this since I saw the original post) I can't think of such a situation.

If you can provide me with an example of a situation as indicated above, I'd love to see it, in order to give it consideration.

Maybe you want to read through conversations that happened while you were there but have no need to be in the channel anymore?

mIRC already has a 'keep channels open' option, this would just make it possible with a command too. I see no reason not to add it.
Posted By: RusselB Re: /part -k - 07/04/07 11:42 PM
OK...I can see that, although I use the logs for that as they allow me to go back a lot further than what the 'conversation history' (for lack of a better description) in the channel allows me to see.

Some channels dont like idlers, i think this would be useful in such cases. I dont see the reasoning behind this suggestion being any different to the reasoning behind the equivelent 'keep channels open' and 'keep dcc chats open' options.
Posted By: b1ink Re: /part -k - 08/04/07 12:09 PM
exactly. I want to read the whole page when I'm dne with the channel.

Sounds like a perfectly logical suggestion, I support!

If the channel doesn't like idlers, then you're not going to get any more information using this suggestion, per hixxy's indicated situation than you would using logs of the time when you were in the channel.
As I have said, I have nothing against this suggestion, however, I can't see any real use for it unless you don't want to use logs.

Well there's a use right there :P
Posted By: Om3n Re: /part -k - 08/04/07 06:48 PM
Many help channels prefer that people leave after they have recieved the help they were after. In such cases its much easier to use a flag to keep the window open rather then opening log files (if you need the information still). And of corse many people dont log at all (such as myself).

I do think that apart from the small tweak in part command to not close the window, mirc would also need to set an internal marker to identify it as a 'stale' window. So that the 'rejoin channels on connect' feature does not apply to it.

This would be very useful to me if I want to read up on when I was away from the channel but don't want to have that beeping noise going on everytime there is a new post :P Also it would keep organization. Suppose you want to part a channel but want to keep it in your channel line-up. The only way I can do that is to spam hop about 2 or 3 times so the server wont let me join but mIRC still keeps it open. This would be a great feature to add so I dont have to spam hop every time I need to part a channel but keep the order for one reason or another.

Well... if there is gonna be a /part -k there should be a /join -k also.

Posted By: Jigsy Re: /part -k - 18/04/07 07:24 AM
... Why, exactly?
Posted By: hixxy Re: /part -k - 18/04/07 11:28 AM
What would that do? Keep open the channel windows that don't exist yet? :P
Posted By: NaquadaServ Re: /part -k - 18/04/07 08:21 PM
Agreed nice idea, perhaps also an option that enables that always, unless the window is explicitly closed.

Also I think the window should remove the nick list and editbox when not joined to the channel, as an indicator (perhaps just a background color change for the editbox). And when the channel is rejoined, the editbox and nick list are simply added back in to the window; channel text would be undisturbed! smile

I've just been thinking about this now. I'm not sure what your idea of /join -k was, but, I'm thinking it could function like /join -i. (Which makes you join the last channel you were invited too.)

So it could perhaps make you join the last channel you were kicked from ... Maybe?

I don't know. *shrugs*

I'm not sure why I didn't post my support earlier. This sounds like a useful and moderately easy-to-implement feature. I would appreciate it, as well as an option to make default /part behavior avoid closing the window (perhaps requiring another switch to "force" the window closed--though the sub-window X would still operate normally). Thank you.

I was loking for this option yesterday. I found myself in a channel i don't normally use, but lurking was prohibited. you were serverd in order of join but I had to leave and I would have never remembered the next day the channel name. Convenience would have let me /part -k #channelname then i could have easily done /join #[tab] to re-join it next morning.

Also I already keep channels open in options, but not rejoin on connect, for logon reasons.

It's not possible for all suggestions to be included for each version, but a lot of the reasonable ones are added at some point.
Posted By: segosu Re: /part -k - 18/08/07 02:29 PM
Jinx_Dojo: I think the default should be to part, and then if you really wanted that behaviour you could make an alias "part part -k $1-"

I support this idea. I've wanted this for a while.
Posted By: sparta Re: /part -k - 18/08/07 03:40 PM
Why not just copy and save the channel in a *.txt file? if im on a channel i want to return to, then i make shure i have the name for it somewhere in a txt file or i add it to my auto join on connect, i don't see any good/valid reasons why some people would like to have a channel window open wehere they cant talk? i have to many channels open to keep track of all of them all time as it is. then deal with channels im not on too.. smirk so i dont suport this idea.

This would make sense if the option wasn't already in mIRC. It is, mIRC has a "keep channels open" option; we just want a way to be able to leave the window open when we issue a /part command.
Posted By: Jinx_Dojo Re: /part -k - 20/08/07 12:36 AM
segosu: I'm not requesting the default behavior be changed, only that the option exist in order to change it. The /Part alias is a good idea, but may interfere with other scripts, and would also require carrying other possible switches to the original /part. So, it'd be easier to have a client-wide setting for default behavior.

I have already suggested this feature long time ago, and people agreed to add it, but it wasn't added.
