My suggestion would be to create a feature disabling highlights (especially the sounds) on specific, user-defined channels. I'm in about 160-180 IRC channels in total, and some of them have other "Peter"'s which get attention quite often as well.

That's why I prefer scripts to let me know what's going on. It's quick, easy, and works great.
