Whilst some (that's 'most') people seem to dislike this idea, a number of others would like irc:// links to be implemented into mIRC so that you can actually click irc:// links and a new server window be opened.

Others argued this would cause security issues (exploited servers), and make life for spammers easier, and wouldn't be worth it because the numbers of people who use it illegitimately (or not at all) would exceed those that used it otherwise. Up to Khaled to decide smile

Some argue that the feature would pose no danger if an on/off option given, defaulted to 'off'. This would please everyone and not cause any problems.

Why debate your own feature suggestion? Those opposed
to it will do that smile I too would like too see it added, it's no
more insecure than a hundred other features.

This feature has already been suggested. Please use the search link when posting a new suggestion. also remember to search back more than a week!

Personally, I am opposed to it. However, the pros and cons of it were being 'debated' quite thoroughly on IRC and despite a couple of people's strong feelings about it being implemented, nobody bothered to post here even though this place was pointed out to them. So I did it for them, as that seemed to be the answer smile

Edit: lol argv0 *thwap*

i think its no more exploitable than telling someone to type /server -m irc.server.net. But perhaps a warning dialog with an option to remove that dialog if u wish, could be implimented if it was made.

You mean like there is currently for http links? I agree

Nice idea, but "Off" by default.

I could go both ways with this. It would make spammers life a little more graceful in my opinion, but granted I would probably use it sometimes, or use it to help people trying to get to other networks/channels. I really wouldn't mind this if it was off by default, and when on and you click one of these links it warns you with an option to turn the warning off and possibly to also disable the irc links, this way it would make it easier for someone not wanting this at all and to lazy to go sift through the mIRC Options.

Also, I would not recommend making it easy to turn off and on say /irclinks <on/off>. If a command like this would to be implemented with this feature, also an option to disable this command, perhaps where the option to disable /run is?

lol, good one!

I'm not for or against it, though it probably should be internal it is easy to implement with script, just two lines of code smile
  • on $^*:hotlink:/\birc\72\/\/\S+/Si:*:return
    on $*:hotlink:/\birc\72\/\/\S+/Si:*:run $1

With "Chat links" & "Confirm requests" both enabled in Options > IRC > Catcher you get a dialogue asking whether to change servers, open a new connection, or (if a channel is specified) to join the channel on the current server

why not have it even not even show the link at all... ie.. someone culd say <a href="irc://irc.someserver.domain.net/bleh/" target="_blank">irc://irc.someserver.domain.net/bleh/</a> ... but if u choose to it wont ever show the link on screen, let alone not let you click it. but also have it be able to be cached as http links are. smirk
