I have tried many ideas for fixing the following, but have not yet succeeded:

Whenever I attempt to receive a file via XDCC, my computer will alternate hanging and responding every 6 seconds or so. This usually happens after receiving a bit of the file. It never happens instantaneously. I do notice that everytime it hangs, the connection light on my network switch goes off, and goes back on when my computer responds again.

Has anyone else experienced this, or knows of a fix?

That's "chat" - for chatting - this is not the same as downloading off XDCC bots illegally!

It's annoying how many people use mIRC as a file sharing program...very annoying. As far as I know, it was NOT designed for this. Sure, the DCC function was implemented so people could send and receive files (i.e. pictures, text files, whatever) but not the latest movies which aren't out on DVD/Video yet!

So, I'm sure if you put as much hard work and effort into getting help with your problem, as you do into finding and downloading files, you can find a solution for your problem somewhere - mirc.com is not the only place on the Internet with DCC help. Search www.google.com, or instead, simply don't download!

maybe khaled could make it so these types of files cant be sent, i know people will crack the exe, but at least that may lower the ammount of this :tongue:

ok, maybe that wouldnt work, but maybe he could make a fairly low maximum filesize send limit, say 500kb.
that would stop mp3's mpegs,mpg's,avis,midi's and maybe some .exe's in their tracks
but still allow .mrc's .ini's,jpegs possibly bmp's

See my other post in the related Feature Suggestions thread. There's no effective way of mIRC deciding what it 'should' and 'should not' send. Besides, a file limit makes the incorrect assumption that large files will be illegal and small ones will not. About 75% of all JPG's you'll find being sent around IRC or any other protocol are either copyrighted material or porn (even legal porn being sent on IRC is mostly illegal in the sense that there's no verification of the receivers age).

yes but it will get rid of the file sharing of exe's(highest virus risk),mpegs/mpgs/avis(copyrighted/piracy),mp3's/wavs/midis(copyrighted/piracy) so it may not get rid of all crime, but im sure khaled would get a lot of complaints for removing this feature all together, so instead he could drag it down to a minimum

It's not Khaled's job to try and stop people trading files, it is the IRC networks that should be making the effort by closing all fserving rooms. Now a couple of years ago when this forum first opened I used to mention the fact that my network has never allowed the trading of illegal files. Never. And I got laughed at and everyone said, yeah good idea but it's not possible to restrict it. Why did they say that? Because they'd simply never seen it happen, not because it's not possible. Now that a big network like Dalnet has followed the lead people are saying "Ahhh this is possible", and the attitude has changed for the better and IRC networks are conceding that while a DCC does not pass through the server, the server is still used in most cases to initiate the connection. As for rooms that don't use DCC but just have adbots displaying FTP URLs, that is probably just as bad as the network is knowingly being used to advertise the source of illegal software. It's high time that the networks supporting wares channels showed some courage and booted each and every single fserver of illegal files off their servers and put this in front of the priority of looking after their precious user counts.

I understand your frustration about the whole "chat" / "downloading" issue. It seems you strongly believe in what you replied with. However, I must say that it is equally annoying when people will take the time to flame someone on a message board based on assumptions. The details for my original post are as follows:

The XDCC transfer I spoke of in my original post pertains to a Quake 3 mod that I am trying to receive from a friend living in New Jersey. I met this guy through IRC, chat with him through IRC, and am now subsequently trying to receive a file from him through IRC.

The illegal downloading assumption you made against me is not only unfair, but as I said, also annoying. Please, in the future, before you begin lecturing me, please research rather than make your own assumptions.

are you using any scripts/addons? any speed patches? is your friend? have you tried getting the same file type from another sender? adjusting packetsize? is this with all dccs or those from just that one sender? it is possible the problem is on the senders end, or along the connection, or as a result of one of you doing a lot of other things at the same time using up bandwidth thus slowing that send down or even at the provider level (some have put restrictions on uploading)

I've recently discovered more details about this problem. See, at first the connection is made and the file begins to send. The transfer hovers somewhere around 140 K/Sec. After a few megs into the transfer the hanging happens. Now if I let it go long enough, I get a stop message from windows xp with the following information:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with a reference to NDIS.SYS. All of that leads me to believe that either my drivers aren't cooperating with NDIS.SYS ( i ahve the most recent release) or NDIS.SYS has a bug.
