Hi,
I have just opened a new website and it has an irc server on it. I found that I could make myself invisible by typing /mode cameotza +I , but.... it says

ERROR > 501: Unknown MODE flag
cameotza sets mode: -S «+xowghskANcfeW»

What am i doing wrong?

There is a difference between +I & +i

+i makes you invisible to /who & /names unless on a common channel, this also can be set by going to mIRC Options > Connect at the bottom, check the Invisible mode box.

+I on some IRCd's allows opers to join channels undetected/invisibly .. this is not supported by all IRCd's

Invisibly huh. Im not totally sure but being invisible should include not being able to see him/her join or part the channel. I've come across many instances where someone using this mode joins the channel. Yes they don't show up in the nicklist i'll give em that much credit but being able to see them join and part is a dead giveaway...especially if the person with that nickname is a known oper... Thats almost like putting an elephant in with a herd of cows hoping the cows won't notice.

Well if the IRCd supports +I as invisible .. you don't see the join/part either .. but if you were to do a /whois the channel would be listed.

Well the particular one in question does in fact support it. It is just that when an admin uses it, I can see the joins and parts but no nickname is displayed in the nicklist. Hence the reason for my lame analogy on my last post...

Hmm, if you can see JOIN event, mIRC will show joining nick in nicklist, right?

yes

Maybe, maybe not...

IRC Plus is one IRCd that allows opers to hide in rooms and from memory the user mode is +d. When the oper joins and is +d at the time there is no join event. The join event occurs if the oper goes -d whilst in the room and there is a part event either when the oper leaves the room or goes +d again.

Goes to show that there's no real standard on IRC.

No matter what the IRCd supports or doesn't support, if mIRC sees the JOIN, the joined nick will be added to the nicklist .. that's what I got out of his question.

ok on atleats one ircd that i know of u actually have to load the invisibility module ..... it doesnt show as being a mode unless u actually configure your ircd to have it ..... this could be the case in this circumstance

I am running Auspices with Unreal IRCD.
It used to work before the server which it is hosted on changed from redhat to freebsd.

Why would an OS change make this happen?
Also, why would user mode -S occur?

i can answers this.
theres are two reasons why you are getting this first is you may not have the +I invisability module loaded which will give you that message check your unrealircd.conf file to make sure it is

or

and most likly scenario is that you have Unreal 3.2 beta 16 the latest build of the Unreal IRCD and as of beta 15 they stoped that module from working and i do believe they deleted it from the download as well so if you are using a beta 14 or bellow conf file you might as well delete the invisability module from it as it will not work in a million years unless you rewrite the module wink

Yes +I is GONE. It is an invasion of privacy, it is unethical, and it will NOT be returning to Unreal EVER. Hope that clears it up...
