is there any way i can truly hide my isp and stuff from the irc server? For example when I whois myself it says " is connecting from *@cpe-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.carolina.res.rr.com" where the xxx are my IP. i have my router configured with a domain from DynDNS, can i get that to show to the server as where I am connected from?

Probably not. When you connect to an IRC server it performs a DNS lookup on your IP to get the associated hostname (normally referred to as a "reverse DNS" request). The response is determined by your ISP, so your ISP would have to change their DNS records to return to your DynDNS hostname, which isn't something ISPs normally do.

Some servers have host-masking services, you should check with your network's help channel. If the network you're using doesn't then you'll have to use a proxy/bouncer (which would sit between you and the IRC server).

Usually IRC servers block your host mask and IP. When you whois yourself, only you, and the network opers can see your IP and host mask.

Correct, to "see what others see", perform a /who on your nickname.

Dyndns is a service to access your "actual" ISP connection (your external IP) via login to this service, thus dyndns and similar services are just "forwarding" the connection, in one direction.

The other way round, if you don't want to connect directly to an external location - like an IRC network-, you can use some kind of general proxy server ("open proxys" are blocked on most networks due to frequent abuse) or - in the case of IRC -, some bouncer/vHost service (As a side note, some net[php][/php]works also provide network-bound vhosts).

Besides these ways to connect indirectly, you'll gain some degree of anonymity by cloaking (usermode +x) on most IRC networks: only network oppers are able to see the uncloaked, "actual" host that you're using to connect to this net. (And you'll lose this cloaking for DCC connections, as they are by definition directly client-to-client.)

If you have a static IP, It's worth asking your ISP's webmaster to add a reverse entry for your IP to resolve to example.hostname.net.
