"Unable to resolve server" means that mIRC (and therefore Windows) cannot convert the server hostname given (eg. irc.someserver.com) into an IP address to communicate with. This generally means one of three things:

1. You're not connected to the internet. Presumably we can discount that one.

2. The server hostname you've given has a typo in it. Double check you've given the correct server name.

3. The server no longer exists or uses a different hostname. Try visiting the IRC network's website to find a different server for that IRC network.

my servers list is blank and I'm not sure how to identify a proper server. Can you suggest an appropriate one?

There's hundreds of IRC networks, each made of one or many different IRC servers. I suggest you try some servers out of the "default" servers list, most should be working:

- if mIRC is running at the moment, quit mIRC
- download a new serverlist: http://www.mirc.com/servers.ini (right click - save as: servers.ini)
- replace your current servers.ini with this file and restart mIRC.

If you have problems to locate the folder containing your current servers.ini, type in mIRC: //echo -a $mircdir
