How the hell do I disable the folder view on the left? I know it's possible, because I always have it disabled. But I can't figure out how. Maybe this could be made a little more obvious, as in at least within the realm of possibility of figuring it out?

Sounds like you're talking about the treebar. If so, click View, then uncheck Treebar.
