Whenever I do a whois or who on a channel I get this error:

WHOIS Unknown command

same with the other one, it doesn't seem to have the commands

A very few number of IRC servers have the WHOIS and WHO functions disabled. Do you know if this is the case?

Also, try using this: /whois <nick> <nick>

Regarding the /who, it won't show the channels if the person has mode +i (invisible) active. Some servers set this mode automatically
