If a network chooses to mask/encrypt the IP of it's users it's done so that people can't reverse it. Even if someone here knew the algorithm being used there's no way they could know the key used by the server unless they were an admin on it (in whch case they probably wouldn't give it out anyway). If you want to know a user's IP address and have a legitimate reason to know it, just ask them what it is.

Is it even reversable?, I havent really looked myself, i thought it just tossed junk in there, but thinking on it it would likely be some type of logical value. Even then itr might not be reversable, or would that mean mayeb 2 people might get the same one? (by is reversable im assuming you knew the method and the keys).

It's probably different for each different ircd, but I know on the ircd that my network uses, any one address will get the same hidden mask everytime. More than one host can have the same mask as another host. I doubt that the value is reversible because there are many possibilities for the same result.. much like if someone gave you the number 38 and asked what two numbers they had added to get that number.. there are many possibilities. I think it's the same concept as MD5.

Well I was assuming the server was using a reversible encryption method. It's entirely possible the server could just use a one-way hashing algorithm and retain an internal list of which masked host matches which IP for when the true IP is needed. Cryptographic hash functions are specifically designed to create a very very low likelihood of two inputs ever creating the same output so there's nothing stopping a server using this method.

Well i spent an un exciting 10 mins of my life investigating this, i logged onto a irc server using 6 ips all in a row ones (works), and the made up addy parts for each were so radically different I didnt see anything that gives anything away. Thus ended my interest frown [i have a low attention span]
