Please Read Karen - 27/02/03 01:33 PM

My Threads keep being deleted regardless if they have spam in them or not Can you please do something about it

Re: Please Read Karen - 27/02/03 09:50 PM

Maybe your idea of advertising is not the same as whoever is giving your posts the bootskies.

If you mention a URL and say "Hey go here" or otherwise word your post to encourage all the users to visit there then it is advertising.

Re: Please Read Karen - 28/02/03 01:27 AM

seeing as there wasn't a single link IRC server or channel in there I hardly think it was spam, if Emails arn;t allowed Karen should have stated that in his/her post mad
Posted By: The_Game

Re: Please Read Karen - 28/02/03 04:51 AM

Ok you may not have provided a link but telling users what network and/or channel you are on is considered a mild form of spam i.e. "Hey join this network <insert network name here> if you have any questions you can either visit me here <enter channel name here> or you can email me at <insert email address here>!" That my friend is spam. I am assuming that karen didn't post anything on spamming because that is like common knowledge to any IRC user.

Re: Please Read Karen - 28/02/03 05:13 PM

Nope here is what the post was basicly

Myself and some friends have started up a new software group blah blah to visit us [edit] or email me at [~~Email Deleted~~] for the information
Posted By: Poppy

Re: Please Read Karen - 28/02/03 05:19 PM

I'd say that was spam. Also, it's not a good idea to post your email addy in a thread/post unless you don't mind getting spammed yourself.

anything that displays info of yours on another site IS SPAM

Re: Please Read Karen - 28/02/03 09:53 PM

Yea but you left out a crucial part, "unsolicited" if he was asked to post his email and/or the info for whatever it is he is doing, well then that would not be spam. But if you do it without being asked...

Re: Please Read Karen - 01/03/03 03:46 AM

a post about a place to go to trade software/games/etc is most definately spam, not to mention that this forum isnt warez central. You cant seriously think any of the moderators would have left a post like that up? Even editing the spam wouldnt help that one.

We clearly ask that you not spam or advertise here...something that anyone who uses IRC or email should know is frowned on.The reason we edit out emails is for YOUR protection, since many ppl dont seem to be aware there are bots that scan the web looking for email addys to spam.

I fail to see how your posts, The_Game, are any different. Your signature clearly states a server and a channel that you're (maybe) a moderator in. That my friend is spam too! Try not to be so hypocritical on trivial things.

Re: Please Read Karen - 01/03/03 02:20 PM

Advertising is against the rules, yes. However you are missing one important thing which is this:

It is quite customary on just about every forum in the world that users can quote their own website URL/ IRC channel in signatures. If it was to be banned here in the name of rigidly enforcing the advertising rule then it would be the first forum in the world to do so.

If this is the case, then aren't the rules very contradictive? It is alright to list what servers/channels you hang out at in your signature (which appears on every single post you make), but if you mention anywhere in the body of just one post the SAME exact information, it is considered advertising? Please! You can NOT justify the difference from posting "advertisements" (servers/channels you like to visit) in your signature versus making a post with the same information. This is just silly.
Posted By: Collective

Re: Please Read Karen - 01/03/03 04:00 PM

Well why don't you put it in your sig then?

The signature is a far less disruptive place to have an advertisement, if they were allowed anywhere else the board would be flooded with threads made by people trying to advertise their dead channels.
Posted By: Watchdog

Re: Please Read Karen - 01/03/03 05:10 PM

Please! You can NOT justify the difference

I don't need to. However as a forum owner I also grant my users the same right as I have become accustomed to. It's a matter of having some respect for the people that make a site what it is. It's also about being reasonable instead of being a nazi.

While on this subject and as Collective has clearly indicated, there's a big difference between posting a URL on it's own and plastering a thread with HEY COME HERE AND DOWNLOAD MAH L337 MP3 PLAYA <-- Used by a poster in another thread elsewhere here.

Signatures on posts are just a "This is me, this is where I come from". It's a measure put in by a vast majority of forum coders for this specific purpose. However the person that put something similar to what I said in allcaps in the other thread I mentioned thinks that this is a submission service. It's not. It's a discussion forum and nothing else.

Re: Please Read Karen - 01/03/03 08:39 PM

In my case, and prolly for many others, i have the network and channel i am in my sig as a way for ppl to find me (or any of our channel ops) online if they feel they need an explanation of my post or help in real time.

In members profiles there is a place to put the channel /network they frequent and various other info. Do some ppl on all msg boards abuse the ability to put things in their sigs when their intent is to spam? Sure. Is it possible that some of those are infected urls or lead to infected downloads? Sure, ditto in their profiles. When the intent is to show this is where i am if you need help, this is what i'm all about, thats a lot diff from the blatant spam we see some ppl post.

IMO, in all cases you have to take intent into consideration. When i tell someone to go to a network's website to find the answer to their question, i'm not spamming that network, i'm telling them the best place to find their answer. If instead i posted "hey, y'all come to ____", thats spam.

Re: Please Read Karen - 01/03/03 09:58 PM

If you want to get into the technicalities of my signature well ok here you go...I did not specifically tell anyone to join a network, or a channel nor did I ever provide a link to any webpages pertaining to the network or channel that I chat on in any post that I have made. I only put said information in my signature because the same reason as most (parabrat nailed it on the money) So that if anyone had any questions about a post or anything they can more than likely find me there to ask me in person.

If you need to know yes I have had a few people come in and speak to me about posts I had made, they either wanted clarification or to just come in and shoot the perverbial [censored]. Hell If I wanted to be a smartass about it well you know where your nickname is to the upper left..right where it says where you're from. Isn't that advertising where youre from? Yep. Did we ask where you're from? Nope. Do we care? Nope...

Re: Please Read Karen - 02/03/03 01:27 AM

It is absolutely ludicrous that anyone would think making a thread to advertise something and putting your network info/email in your sig are the same thing.

People with it in their signature make posts relevant to the thread each time they post (or sometimes a little off-topic, but thats ok).. but at least there is OTHER content.. the MAIN content of the post.

Do you always expect to be banned for a post where you point out something that the forum host has done that you think is wrong as it was the first post that had been made, maybe you deleted the post as well as banning me but as haven't deen able to have a look I don't know, would have expected to have the post edited and then if I had continued to post similat post to be banned but not for the first post.

Re: Please Read Karen - 02/03/03 08:49 AM

Once again, any prob you feel you have with Watchdog's forum has nothing to do with this forum. This thread is questioning what constitutes spam and why the original posters thread was deleted for spamming HERE . How Watchdog runs his forum and his decision to ban you or anyone else, or what he determines is an acceptable post on his forum isnt our concern, nor does it have a place here.

If Watchdog doesnt accept private msgs here,or you dont, his profile states where he can be found should he choose to discuss the matter any further than he already has in reply to your other posts here on the subject. In the event you wish to question my decisions, or any other moderators, regarding what is deleted or removed on this forum in any post of yours, feel free to msg.

Re: Please Read Karen - 02/03/03 02:39 PM

Basically you were banned because I don't want you following me around like a bowel movement. You are here, you were in my chatroom, on my website.

You are also unidentified so just bugger off and get over your issues.

Para how the ehck is it warez when I'm the one making the programs with friends? I hardly think it's warez when I'm the one who made them and are giving them out
Posted By: Watchdog

Re: Please Read Karen - 04/03/03 05:45 AM

Make a website and distribute your programmes from there. It's more professional that way.
Posted By: ParaBrat

Re: Please Read Karen - 04/03/03 10:01 PM

ok, so if you are giving away software you have personally completely written totally by yourself and your friends, then it isnt warez. However, i dont care what you are giving away, you were spamming.

The point is that we DONT WANT SPAM HERE! When you post a website/network/channel/etc to which you invite ppl to go to for whatever reason, (which you clearly did) its inviting and spam. We generally edit out email addys for posters protection, however posting an email which you tell ppl to use in order to find whatever it is you are giving away, that also constitutes spam.

Spam is annoying. Ppl dont like it. We frequently urge ppl to not click on every url/go to every site they see spammed, and to not rampantly download software they arent positive beyond any shadow of a doubt what it does. You spammed, we removed it. If you want to spread your software around, peachy...but you cant do it from here.

Since you msgd me the exact same question, consider this a reply to both your post and the msg.

Re: Please Read Karen - 05/03/03 12:30 AM

I did not say HEY goto irc.blahblah.com and #blah for my new software I did just the same as other people do in their signatures without a single link

Further more whoever put you operators incharge was clearly on crack the only decent moderator I've know to moderate isn't here anymore and doesn't want to be a part of this
Posted By: vcv

Re: Please Read Karen - 05/03/03 01:12 AM

What exactly DID you post? Did you start a new thread? Did the new thread contain any information besides asking people to download your software or join your group or whatever?
Posted By: ParaBrat

Re: Please Read Karen - 05/03/03 01:17 AM

" I did not say HEY goto irc.blahblah.com and #blah for my new software "

from this thread:
netecho: "Nope here is what the post was basicly: Myself and some friends have started up a new software group blah blah to visit us [moderator edited] or email me at [~~Email Deleted~~] for the information"

You started a thread for the sole purpose of telling ppl where to go/how to contact you to get what you say is your software and/or presumably to share theirs. The post had nothing else in it.That is inviting. That is advertising. That is spam. That isnt allowed here. Had you included your personal website/network in your signature while at the same time in the body of your post you said "i have software for you to share" then i would consider your signature and post to have the blatant intent of spamming. On the other hand, had someone posted a question "Why isnt my dcc working" and you replied suggesting they check their router, and your website was in your signature that would be a different matter.

Sure, anything in your signature could be considered as a hint to go visit it, but it isnt specifically saying "Come see me at ___ for ___" If you go into a channel and say " i use superduper, you can get it at superduper.com" you have just spammed the channel. If you use the nick superduper, with realname field of superduperscriptie then altho that may arouse the curiousity of some others to investigate superduper on their fav browser, we are into a grey area. Your intent could be to spam, your intent could be pride, your intent could be to brag... but unless you post in the channel " come get superduper" or constantly join/part so everyone will see it, i will assume your intentions to be semi-honorable regardless of my suspicions to the contrary.

Whether you approve of my/our moderating or not, the fact remains that the sole purpose of your original post was to tell ppl you have software and where to find it. That is not allowed here. I have done my level best to explain the reasoning.

I'd hardly catagorise The Game's comment as a flame. The person who started this thread has an obvious problem accepting the law of the jungle. In line with The Game's remark, I reckon he should get over it and move on.

As for your little remark "keyboard warrior" I believe. Sounds to me like you are the one doing the flaming but since you had to open yourmouth...I guess I can be a prick just this once.

Just my thoughts here - when someone personally attacks you, it's the better person that can ignore it and walk away. Whether it's justified or not is beside the point. Funny how these type of threads always end up completely off topic. mad

After the recent shining examples of name calling, rudeness and insults that have no redeeming value to this thread, and since my polite reminder of common courtesy was blatantly ignored, there is obviously only one thing to do.
