This may be a strange question..

What is the 'official' and 'proper' way to pronounce 'mIRC'? I've heard people say it as a word: 'merk' and I've also heard people pronounce it as letters: 'M I R C'. I think the only true answer would be from the mouth of the creator or someone who speaks (verbally) with him.

If anyone knows for sure, please let everyone else know.

Taken from Khaleds FAQ.

Quote:

Question: How do you pronounce mIRC?
Answer: I pronounce each letter, m-I-R-C. However, it's fine to pronounce it as 'mirk'. Often during a conversation I'll switch between both pronunciations, depending on how quickly I want to get my point across!

Question: What does the 'm' in mIRC stand for?
Answer: It quite possibly stands for 'moo', or perhaps even MU.

I prefer "merk" ... it's easier to say one syllable than to say 4. smile

I have always spelled it out m i r c
I guess merk is ok, but its like pronouncing IRC as "erk"
"Yes, I chat to people all over the world on erk"
just doesn't have that certain ring to it

- That's exactly how I'd say it (not that I ever have though to be honest, it's not something that comes up in conversation in my experience). Generally speaking if an acronym can be pronounced easily it will be, (eg. NASA, AWOL, RADAR, SONAR, ASAP, GIF, WAV).

Only thing on your acronym list that I wouldn't include in that list is ASAP. I never say that as a word... I always say the letters themselves. smile

It's true that I say I R C instead of "erk"... not really sure the difference.

Another one to the list that people say as a word... LOL. Or, if you're adventurous, try ROFL... "roffel" or "roffeling" smile

I call it 'Merk' because it is easier than spelling out the letters just the same as I call Australia's national airline 'Kwontus' instead of spelling out the letters Q A N T A S. Then again, someone raised the issue of how to pronounce 'IRC' - saying 'Irk' just doesn't sound right. On the other hand, Microsoft Agent pronounces 'IRC' as 'aye-arc'.

Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service. It was their birthday today too. They started out as a joyflight company which is probably a strange thing since commercial flight was almost non-existant at the time.

Yep, it'd take a long time to spell that out every time you wanted to mention it.
