I know im late but what happened and what are the next best servers to join now that its gone?
Posted By: Watchdog Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 07:47 AM
Choose one from the servers.ini file in mIRC. grin
Posted By: gw1500 Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 03:39 PM
How does that help? They all get the same "can't assign address" error. Am I doning something wrong when I try to do that?

Use Search feature or read posts in "Connection Issues" forum.
Posted By: Watchdog Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 04:08 PM
Are you telling me you get that reply regardless of the network you connect to?
Posted By: gw1500 Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 04:23 PM
Sorry, the poster was asking about servers. It didn't register, until now, that you both must have meant networks.

I guess am looking for the same answer as adiaw83. Restated, what NETWORKS are similar to DALNET? I randomly tried a dozen or so and none had much of anything on them. Thanks.
Posted By: Watchdog Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 04:27 PM
All of the big networks are mostly bots of some kind, channel holders or fserves. The small - medium sized networks are much more fun.
Posted By: gw1500 Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 04:35 PM
Thanks but I am looking for fservs at the moment. No suggestions?

What woudl you suggest I check out in the medium size networks?

My random selection method (eenie, meenie, miinie, moe) only gets me restricted or nearly empty channels.

Thanks.

If you want a comparison of some networks, try web page

If all you want are file servers, i understand many networks dont allow them... yet another reason why you should find something other than mIRC to use for downloading. Try that kaaza thingie.
Posted By: gw1500 Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 04:54 PM
Thanks. Some refuse connections and others say I'm unauthorized but some do work. I wonder if DALNET will ever return.
Posted By: ParaBrat Re: dalnet - 20/01/03 05:09 PM
It will when all this is resolved according to the DALnet admins. Read the post in connections area here headed DALnet Connections...Update.

right now i find it hard to have sympathy for all those who use IRC just to download, as this problem became such a huge nightmare due in large part to all the ppl who accept every file sent to them and click on every url they see, thereby infecting themselves and others. Just because you CAN do something doesnt mean its smart to.

I couldn't agree more. That reply is perfectly accurate. I'm not of the hardline opinion that mIRC is just for chat but it's certainly not primarily for fserving either. It's a sad indictment that IRC is primarly used for filetrading these days instead of interpersonal communication. It staggers me that some IRC administrators brag on their websites about such and such number of connections but never make a distinction between bona fide 'chatters' and bots. Of course trying to make a distinction isn't exactly easy, but it doesn't make their claims any less deceptive.

I dont have any sympathy for them at all. If they were using the program for it's actual intended purpose I could, but to use a chat program solely for file downloads is quite pathetic. Im not saying I DONT do file xfers; I just dont use it SOLELY for file xfers ..... these days I rarely do xfers at all with rare exception

I'm not disagreeing with you guys because I'm 56k so it's not like I trade, but, I think you can blame Khaled for your "opionions". He's who put a file server in mIRC and now you're all mad people use it? Strange.
Posted By: Watchdog Re: dalnet - 22/01/03 11:25 AM
I doubt anyone initially expected mIRC to become a set-and-forget wares bot. I don't care about people filesharing, it's none of my business. This activity is a way of sharing alot more than cracked software though, namely virii, trojans, and the like. That pisses me off no-end.
Posted By: The_Game Re: dalnet - 22/01/03 03:38 PM
Don't get me wrong but having used the fileshare option myself i acquired a trojan that hid itself within my system files on my hard drive and it ate all of them up. on top of that any mp3's (5 gigs waiting to be burned to disc) that i had on my computer they were copied as vbs files...on top of that i had that backdoor trojan that basically brought down 80,000 people the same day...not only that but the kicker was that there were over 7,000 different variations of the same virus/trojan on my computer....i ran McAffee and that didnt work.....I ran norton it worked some but when i found a Virus scanner that did get the job done my computer was so trashed that i had no choice but to do a system recovery....all of this because I tried the fileshare with mIRC....so I for one don't blame anyone one bit for getting pissed off over the fact that mIRC's primary use is for chat rather than downloading. The fact is that it pisses me off that there are people out there that get their jollies off on knowing that they can trash peoples PC's and bringing down Servers....So after I have tried this and I have been one of the unfortunate ones...I try to tell others that if they do use the fileshare to at least be cautious but preferrably use a program that is actually intended for downloads...
Posted By: Poppy Re: dalnet - 22/01/03 04:42 PM
Agreed. At least you had the common sense to realise where such activities could land you - and act responsibly because of it. Others just don't seem to give a toss, or think it can't happen to them.
Posted By: ParaBrat Re: dalnet - 22/01/03 05:36 PM
I'm not mad that ppl use it, i'm annoyed that ppl dont seem to have much sense in how they use it. Blaming Khaled is a pointless comment...thats like saying because i can use my Rossi 38 to blow your brains out, your family should blame Rossi rather than me.

If someone complains they have limitations using notepad to write a letter, i would tell them to go use word as being better suited to their needs... no diff than telling them mIRC is best used for chatting and there are other things better used for filling their puters with trojans and warez.

mIRC has way more potential than what people use it for that is an easy given. I think the biggest problem is people are very uneducated on how it works. Heck many of the people "sharing files" are simply clicking and leeching the don't understand the consequences of accepting every file that they can get their hands on. Furthermore many don't even own a virus scanner mudding up the whole situation. I don't know the point of the ranting and raving but that is my deal.
